I was fortunate enough to host a 26 1/2 radiothon to benefit our school's choir. The teacher needed $1200 to make up a shortfall, as they will go to Nashville May 5th-8th for a competition. Some of her kids stayed with me during the entire time (they cheated and slept in the auditorium, bringing much pleasure to this old guy, since I outlasted them). Counting almost entirely on Facebook, we raised OVER $2600! One of the choir kids said, We don't do Michael Jackson," which prompted a caller to pledge $50.00 if they would. She increased it to $100.00 if I would join in. After I gave fair warning (...be careful of what you wish for...), we went ahead, and a good time was had by all.
These kids were the BEST I've ever worked with on a radiothon. Not one negative thing was said, even when they were bone-tired. They did an excerpt from "My Home Among the Hills," which was killer. They also recorded a rap-flavored liner, which is a keeper. They got on the air LIVE, which is rarely done here. Fortunately, high-school drama was lacking, and 'prima-donna' leanings were kept in check. I was worried if one of the boys was gonna be a GIVA (guy diva), but he was fine.
A lady brought us snacks before and after her shift as a hair stylist. One man pledged $250.00 from North Dakota for one of the choir members. So many families pledged for this one boy (they were all relatives and family friends) that I told him he should either have a statue of him in front of the school, or we should just rename the place in his honor. ;D
The excitement in the studio was overwhelming, and everyone fed off each other's energy. If the kids weren't actively doing something for the radiothon, such as answering phones and recording pledges, along with what was mentioned earlier, they were texting their friends. We sang HAPPY BIRTHDAY to a young man, who promptly donated fifty dollars. He's much loved by the choir.
Unbelievably, the vast majority of the money came in the same day. MUCH could be said of this experience (all positive), but I'll stop now.
