WRSM Sumiton donated to Joy Christian Communications

that's the 2nd statiom that's been given to them. 1170 in Hanceville is the other. They kept it on for like 3 months then went dark. The tower is even gone now.

As I understand it, there are some plans for the rebuilding of the Hanceville station in a "new and improved" manner with a possible upgrade and move that will make it something worth having. Then again, all I've heard is "shop-talk" from different people who deal in real estate and equipment. But, it's probably best to not start rumors.

Don't want to sound negative, but they could call it "The Pit", as in the money pit. The only chance it would have is to go spanish, even then I don't think it would pay the bills.

I believe that two questions are the solution to the problems associated with that station:

  • Was the station ever constructed properly (proper engineering / allocations and construction done)?
  • Was the station ever properly marketed and managed?

From what I've seen, the answer to both of these questions would be an emphatic "no".

Perhaps someone new would try a new approach as well? Or, should we condemn the effort before it gets underway? Personally, I'd prefer to give the new people the benefit of the doubt and let them either succeed or fail on their own. Just because others have failed in what has been (admittedly) a poorly constructed, operated and marketed station doesn't mean that any subsequent owners would do the same. Would you not agree?

I looked up the Joy Christian Communications website. It's being revamped, and it looks as though that the WLYG calls are going to wind up this time on... the Sumiton AM, presumably with the same southern gospel format JCC uses on its other AMs. It says that the new WLYG 1540 is on the air (that might be forthcoming, though). and located in Sumiton, Alabama. I don't believe the Sumiton AM is back on the air, or at least it wasn't a couple of days ago. The FCC shows the WLYG calls are still licensed to the Hanceville AM. It looks like JCC will be playing "musical chairs" with call letters again. They did this a while back with the WZTQ calls, too, on at least a couple of their stations as well. What happened to their other station, WRFS 1050 in Alex City?

Before WRSM went dark (if they did go dark before this 'donation') what was the format? I know they were country for eons but on my website they're mysteriously listed as Urban Adult Contemporary. ???

WRSM has been off the air for quite a while now. They've programmed country for as long as I can remember.

btw, very nice website you have there. I know that must have involved untold amounts of time and effort assimilating that info together. :)

Thank ya.

It took a lot of time in the beginning (and sometimes still does) but that's okay, I have no life so it all works out. :D

Today's Taylor on Radio-Info mentions WRSM was hit by copper thieves: “the building that houses the WRSM studio and transmitter site was devastated by copper thieves who ravaged its heating/air conditioning system, transmitter, control room, and did structural damage to the building itself.”

Ouch. :-[
