wruf am-850

With WRUF-AM recently making the switch to an all sports format and bringing in a heavy hitting local stable of talent.

Does anyone think Randy Wright and the crew at UF might ever look into acquiring an FM translator?

Perhaps one already on file for downtown approval or apply for one off their tower with WRUF-FM.

The newberry translator belongs to Reach Comm and I'm told that they almost never sell translators, though they will lease out unused ones. As far as I know, all other Gainesville translator apps fall into one of three available frequency groups. One is centered at 95.3, one at 101.9 and one at 106.1. All three groups are comprised of several non-comm apps that are MXd with one commercial applicant, rfEngineers.com. Under the present rules, all three channels will go to rfEngineers because non-commercial translators apps cannot go to auction, so they get dismissed when the channels are designated for auction. But, who knows when that will actually happen????

with the money and resources UF has-- if they were serious about throwing 850 on an FM translator, I'm sure when those aforementioned frequencies went to auction-- they'd be able to grab one.

The auction is only for applicants that filed applications in the 2003 filing window. No outsiders, including UF, can participate in the 2003 process. Now, once licenses are issued, the translators can be sold, but I don't think they're going to go for very cheap.

Oh, and there is one other small detail that I almost forgot to mention: Only translators authorized (CP or actual license granted) prior to May of 2008 can host AM stations. The FCC made a special provision in the rules authorizing only existing translators to broadcast AM stations. This rule will probably be changed after the next LPFM window, but for now, it's yet another road-block in Gainesville. The work-around would be to go HD on WRUF-FM and simulcat the AM on the HD3 or 4 channel then translate the HD signal into analog on one of the new facilities.

Also, in addition to any translators that my be available for WRUF-AM, under this scenario, the FM 103.7 HD2, HD3 or HD 4 signal would also be available over the WRUF-FM frequency which would be heard by anyone with an HD receiver residing anywhere within the FM signal footprint. This can be a very good move for WRUF-AM.

u guys r giving me a headache. can we just bring back Rock 104?

Trouble is... no one has an HD radio, so an analog translator relaying the HD channel would be a must.

My acknowledgement of the HD radio receiver was in addition to, not in place of, the translator.
