WRXB's W243AK translator and GM

I've never noticed that 1590 has a translator in Bradenton until yesterday (though apparently it's been active for ages per the FCC dB). I was catching fantastic e-skip to Central America and listening to KREM FM from Belize City, Belize and a Guatemalan late morning on 96.5. After the opening died out, this one was audible in north-central Pinellas, occasionally trading off with a Spanish gospel (not e-skip, likely the East Tampa LPFMer) and the newly branded WDBO-FM, Orlando (580 WDBO simulcast). Anyway, what do you all know about Ed Edwards? I'm not familiar with the name despite his bio (pasted below from the WRXB website, typo's and all):

ED EDWARDS IS A VETERAN BROADCASTER HAVING SPENT OVER 35 YEARS IN THE RADIO &
TELEVISION INDUSTRY IN BOTH MANAGEMENT AND "ON AIR" POSITIONS. ED SPENT FROM
1975 TO 1987 IN THE NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY MARKET WORKING AT VARIOUS STATIONS
INCLUDING WNBC. ED MOVED TO THE TAMPA BAY AREA IN AUGUST OF 1987 AND WAS
APPOINTED OPERATIONS DIRECTOR AT 1280 AM RADIO IN SARASOTA. ED CONTINUED TO
WORK AT VARIOUS STATIONS IN THE AREA, PRIMARILY AS EITHER GENERAL MANAGER OR
DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS NORMALLY ASSISTING NEW OWNERSHIP WITH FORMAT CHANGES. ED
WAS ALSO AN ANNOUNCER FOR SEVEN YEARS FOR MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALLS CHICAGO WHITE
SOX AND THEN SEVEN YEARS FOR THE CINCINNATI REDS WHILE ALSO DOING FOOTBALL AND
BASKETBALL PLAY BY PLAY DURING THE OFF SEASON. ED's VOICE CAN BE HEARD ON
I.D.'s, LINERS,AND COMMERCIALS ON NUMEROUS STATIONS ACROSS THE USA. ED CAME TO
WRXB ON FEBRUARY 1 ST 2011 AS GENERAL MANAGER. OUTSIDE OF BROADCASTING, ED IS
AN ACCOMPLISHED BASEBALL COACH POSTING A CAREER RECORD OF 442 WINS INCLUDING THE
2003 AAU FLORIDA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. IN ADDITION,ED IS KNOWN AS "AN EXPERT" ON
THE JFK ASSASSINATION AND SPEAKS AND BROADCASTS LIVE FROM DEALEY PLAZA DALLAS
,TEXAS ON THE ANNIVERSARY EACH NOVEMBER 22ND. AND IS CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF
WRITING A BOOK ON THE SUBJECT. ED IS SINGLE AND LIVES IN SARASOTA, FLORIDA.

I'll pass on that request.....

Seems like a loaded question. :p Also seems like this should be 2 threads 1 addressing W243AK and the other on "Big Eddie"

My take on W243AK is WSLR in Sarasota is destroying W243AK

And all my dealings with Ed have been positive, he eats and sleeps radio I wish him luck with WRXB and hope they can capitalize on the Urban AC loss in the Tampa Metro.

IRRC, I first noticed W243AK as being a translator for WRXB back in late February or March, but they may have been in the FCC data base at that time, but they weren't broadcasting. I was actually picking up WSLR, albeit a very weak signal, both in my car and sometimes inside on my Sangean PR-D5 in the general vicinity of USFSP- downtown.

So I drove to Palmetto and they were not on the air at that time.

I have been receiving the WRXB translator for the last 2 or 3 months, instead of WSLR, of course they're weak as well and sometimes with tropo 96.5 out of Orlando smacks them down; only on rare occassions do I receive the 96.5 translator across the bay in Ruskin.

btw- just down the dial from 96.5......... 96.3 the sometimes weekend pirate from south St. Pete was back on the air this past weekend after being AWOL for at least a year or so.

There's pirates on 96.1 and 96.3 here in South Bradenton/North Sarasota one is reggae-ish and the other is like a generational oldies.

96.1 (Radio Whitfield) - WWTF) has been around and has had numerous posts about it in the past... I can pick them up on Oneco around 15 St & 51 Ave with a fairly decent signal, now that I have an omni directional FM antenna up around 10 feet...(going up higher as soon as I can obtain 20-30 foot of tower ...) Actually I kinda like their format too ... 96.3 is much more powerful, over modulated and bleeds all over...I think this is the one that used to be on 103.1 and overrode the micro FM that used to be in Pescara Lakes MHP until the owner/ operator passed away and his wife gave the entire system to someone in another MHP in Palmetto.... Frankly I wouldn't mind trying a little micro FM / AM combo myself.... no more than 1 watt though... don't want to give the FCC a reason to visit by having too much over the legal limit... But alas, with NO income and awaiting Social Security Disability benefits, that's a long way off...Unless someone here has other suggestions...

Anyone know of any other micro AM's or FM's in the area ??? I have heard that a few mobile home parks have some, but haven't tracked them down... There are a few associated with the school board, like Manatee High (FM), Lee middle (AM) but am not aware of any others...

And do it goes....

I think the Electa (?) Lee school 36-3700 blk of 53 ave w is also on 1610...

Manatee High is on 90.1 I think... They were WAY overpowered a couple of years ago and after I questioned their power etc... suddenly it dropped back down to where it should be....

You could try to get someone from the school board to give you some info... but good luck.... I think the one contact with Manatee High is longtime transistor collector, author and AWA member, Norm Smith...

Oh wait.... you already have Electa Lee listed....
