WRXP 101.9 on the Rise

According to David Hinckley in the NY Daily News, WRXP has tripled its ratings in the past year among the 18-34 demo. It now ranks #8 in that age group.
It has been tough, but it appears that the station's switch to rock 2 years ago is finally gaining some traction.
Sorry, but I cannot find a link to the article, which has the recent station ratings in New York, among various age groups.

Hinckley does have a new article published in his section of the Daily News' website, but it's only about Holly Hunter's TV show.

Yes, they are sounding much better especially more in an alternative lean, attracting the former LIR and G-Rock listeners.

After sounding like an unfocused kitchen sink at first, they seemed to find a good balance by the end of 2009. But recently it seems like they've been heading towards the opposite extreme of sounding like Radio 104.5 with lots of overplayed 90's titles and a lack of new music. The main difference between them and Radio 104.5 is that instead of playing out-of-place Hot AC fare and teen-oriented pop-punk, they're playing out-of-place classic rock titles. But otherwise they seem to share a similar play-it-safe approach right now. I guess I can't fault them if this is helping their ratings, and it's still good to have a station playing alternative rock in any significant capacity, but they've just been leaving me a little cold lately.

Also, speaking of Nik Carter, it appears that he either left or was let go. I haven't heard him in a couple weeks, and his page has been taken down from the website (you can still see the Google cache here). Does anyone know what's up?

Nik has left WRXP. Here is a link to a brief article in AllAccess: http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/73045/wrxp-afternoons-nik-carter-departs.
This is disappointing news, as I thought he was quite entertaining.
While I hope that 'RXP does not go more in a classic rock direction, it may be tempting to management, given the success of WAXQ. In L.A., AAA station KSND had dismal ratings. When it leaned more towards classic rock within the past year or so, the ratings went up a lot.

variety is the spice of life;
especially when we're naming artists that are getting inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, and having major films made about them...

If anything I wouldn't mind hearing MORE Third Eye Blind. I haven't heard RXP play them in a while. I'd especially like hearing something other than "Jumper" or "Semi-Charmed Life" (good songs, but they are pretty heavily played on [Hot] AC stations). Wouldn't mind hearing some of the less heavily played Coldplay stuff either. I'm more than a little tired of Kings of Leon, but they're popular and they fit the format (unlike some other stuff they play), and at least they're not slamming them as much as they were about 6 months ago. As for The Stooges, NY Dolls, and so forth... sure, why not? That would be better than AC/DC and Van Halen for sure.

At least they're doing something interesting this weekend... a "Resurrection Weekend" focused on the 80's and 90's. Hopefully it will be all alternative/punk/new wave with no arena rock, and not too many burned-out songs. The promo indicates that "some things are best left in the past" preceded by a clip of "Rock Me Amadeus", but I'd rather hear that than some of the songs they have in regular rotation.

"Resurrection Weekend..." Oh, I get it - Easter... Good thing they use it now, rather than wait until Trent Reznor returns with a new tour... :-X

I'm a 90's kid, I like Third Eye Blind (as well as a lot of other 90s pop/alternative/rock) but I don't think they belong on station that calls themself a rock station. That's part of the reason why I would like to see a 90's station some time down the line.

There is a 90s station its on Sirius channel 9.
RXP needs to loose the 90s rock to be a better station, they need to play more new music!

I know! WTF! The 90s were 20 years ago. 90's=Oldies.

I don't think RXP should drop 90's music, or even 80's music for that matter (unless it's arena rock). Alternative rock's heritage should be represented on this station. I just think they they shouldn't rely so heavily on the overplayed, predictable 90's titles. And they should definitely be playing more new music.

I don't listen to 'RXP, clearly, so I can't say whether their gold stuff fits or not. But, generally speaking, music that is >15 years old falls into the classic rock bucket.

Actually, songs and artists that were an integral part of the AOR era of Rock radio fall into the "classic rocket bucket". You don't automatically qualify simply by being 15 years or older. Have you ever heard bands like the Pixies and the Replacements played on classic rock radio?

I agree. RXP needs to focus more on the 90's and current rock. The songs they do play from the 90's are the same played out ones repeated over and over (the same nirvana and smashing pumpkins).
