WRXP Adding New Music in Last Days

With the station going off the air by tomorrow, last night around 8:35 WRXP played a new song by the Beastie that sounded more like what one can describe as old school rap.

RXP is known for playing new music. But if the station is leaving the airwaves, does it really benefit the station by playing new releases with no other outlet to pick up this music?

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

But with the station closing tomorrow, how many more spins is this or any other newly added songs going to get? Most RXP listeners have not even heard the new Beastie Boys song.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

I'm thinking at this point that WRXP is programming, in its last hours, to satisfy promoters they hope to be maintaining their relationships with in the future.

They might also be possessed by the archaic notion that their audience might want to hear it. The record came out in May, so if they haven't been playing it thus far, perhaps it's because the consultant that pooh-poohed adding it is no longer in play.

To my mind, I say let 'em play what they'd like. They're outta there by tomorrow no matter what. You'd deny a condemned staff a last meal?

They don't care about the format or numbers of plays at this point. The station is going down in flames and the jocks have to hold back from telling Merlin to go F**K themselves and their stupid MILF Talk format ideas.

I have heard that song long before today. The station has pretty much maintained the existing format with little change these last 4 weeks.

In the past, I've noticed that a station's playlist might seem a little more adventurous right before they're about to flip. However, I have almost never been surprised to hear a song anytime I turned on 'RXP ever, the overall music mix has changed a bit but it's always been predictable since the day it came on the air.

I don't think WRXP has added any new music for a couple weeks. However, today it does seem like they opened up the gold library a little, and let the airstaff play some of their own picks.

I'd like to give a tip of the hat to the WRXP staff. I admit, I've done my fair share of criticism of the station's musical direction. But after seeing the ratings increases over the past few months, and putting my own musical tastes aside, I realized how hard they must have been working to make a rock station work in what supposedly isn't a rock town. They were obviously doing something right in order to see these ratings increases, especially in suburban markets. I really think it would have been worth it for Emmis to stand by the station for another year, but I guess Merlin made them an offer they couldn't refuse. Plus, contrary to the criticism that the airstaff gets from some folks around here, I always thought they were passionate music lovers who really cared about the music and their audience, and it showed on the air. I'm glad the personalties were given a chance to say goodbye, and Leslie Fram and Brian Phillips in particular handled it very well (with input from other staffers).

Also glad to hear that the station will be continuing as a stream online. It will be interesting to hear if it sounds more like latter-day "Rock 101.9 RXP", the more eclectic "Rock Experience" of 2008-09, or something in between. I assume this will be operated by Emmis, independently of Merlin. Maybe they will put it on a 97.1 or 98.7 subchannel, though I don't want to lose the Hot 97 throwback channel. I do hope Merlin keeps the smooth jazz format on 101.9 HD2.

And when Drelio signed off last night, not only did he thank a who's who of jocks and staffers, but he also recognized the since-departed Bryan Schock and Nik Carter. "They were part of this station, too," he said.

They've been playing that new Beastie Boys song for over a month, maybe 2-3 months.

Although I do have the single, I believe that The Beastie Boys are fuming in anger that WRXP signs off into the sunset....I would be too since the station filled a big niche into Rock and Alternative fans.

If Merlin spins the Wheel Of Formats and it ends up as the same rock format as WRXP, then they must bring it back..

DO IT FOR THE ROCK MUSIC FANS AND NOT THE CORPORATE GREED!

And the 1.9 share of Beavises and Butt-Heads who steal instead of buy what advertisers offer?
