WRXP IS A MESS

Plus, an ESPN format would be easier to sell in a cluster with a Hot 97 and 98.7 Kiss-FM than an 'RXP would...

Not sure how ESPN on 101.9 helps Hot 97 and 98.7 KISS-FM. 'RXP doesn't exactly compliment the latter two stations. When smooth jazz was on 101.9, the Emmis three complimented each other well.

Emmis may need to sell or lease 101.9 if they want to retain 97.1 and 98.7. :)

At least WEPN has Knicks play-by-play.

Speaking of... if LeBron signs with the Knicks, how fast will ESPN want to go after the 101.9 signal?

I don't understand how NYC can't support a true alternative station like KROQ or WFNX, if it has never been tried?

Change it to alternative with hardly any DJ's like wkrk (formerly k-rock, now Radio 923) in Cleveland. They went from around a 1.8 to mid 4's in cume in under a year by ditching the DJ's and just making it straight alternative. Just label it as "RXP", drop the "New York's Rock Experience" catchphrase, and make it like an ipod of 90's-00's alternative with some new rock thrown in.

We've been there and done that! It was called 101.1 JACK-FM. We all know how that ended up! :)
No, Jack wasn't an alternative station. It was a weird mix of rock and 80s hits, and was horrible, in my opinion. I'm suggesting a strictly 90's-00's alternative format, with no DJ's, and maybe just a simple pre-recorded voice drop before each song saying the name of the song and artist.

ESPN needs 101.9 for the Jets even more than the Knicks with or without LeBron. The Jets are coming off a near Super Bowl season and are on one of the worst sticks in NY. That's not a good thing for an NFL team that plays in the largest media market, especially when teams in small and medium size markets have far superior coverage. :)

How about "SMOOTH JAZZ" with a Standards lean (vocals by buble, sinatra, bennett as examples)? Could possibly work in NYC. Then again, I might be crazy.

I think it was already tried here on the same frequency... remember "Chill"?

There are several stations that are niching away at the audience. Most of the college stations have the format covered. Then you have a problem in defining the music in New York. It's easier in LA where there's a more organized club scene for this kind of music. What artists would make up "true alternative," and if they're popular, aren't they being played somewhere already? Then you get all this second-guessing of what the format should be, who's being missed, and who to play. You don't see that as much in any other format. That's a result of the music being so dispersed.

Just be happy there is some form of alternative rock. I know some people would like it to go Sports, but then what, a complaint that there is no rock station on the dial? At least you have something.

No rock station on the dial if WRXP flips?

Well, there's Q104, and of course, K-Rock on 92.3 HD-2... so that would be a grand total of... one station. ;D

What about all the college stations? WFUV? WFMU? WSOU? They all play alternative rock. Isn't that a way to avoid the corporate machine?

WFUV's format is AAA, while 'FMU is a free-form station. There is though a 2-hour weeknight program on 'FUV called the Alternate Side that does play new indie/alternative music.
