WRXP's DEFINITIVE 1019 LABOR DAY 2010 COUNTDOWN RESULTS

From the Brian Phillips blog on the station's website, the 2010 edition:
http://www.1019rxp.com/Blog/Phillips/blogentry.aspx?BlogEntryID=10137450

This countdown aired on WRXP-FM-101.9 New York ("Rock 101~Nine") from Friday 9/3/10 at 6am ET through Monday 9/6/10 at approximately 4:30pm ET, with the Top 100 songs replayed from approximately 4:35pm ET on Monday 9/6/10 through 12:20am ET on Tuesday 9/7/10. This was billed as the top songs from the last 30 years/3 decades, thus the dropping of (most of) the 1960's/1970's classic rock from the list. (There are a few late 1970's tunes that slipped through the cracks.)

Last year's #1 was "London Calling" by The Clash which came in at #55 on this year's list. This year's #1 came in at #36 last year. For comparison, the 2009 edition: http://www.1019rxp.com/Blog/Steve/blogentry.aspx?BlogEntryID=10049659

I'm skeptical that this year's #1 song, Bittersweet Symphony, by The Verve was really the most voted for tune. My guess is that the list is based very loosely on listener ballots and more on what the staff thought fit the station's sound.
But the countdown was an interesting listen, with some good songs I haven't heard in a while, and many that were unfamiliar. It was fun to hear a lot of One Hit Wonders.

I don't understand all the Tom Petty, Springsteen, Van Hagar and 80's Aerosmith. So much for eliminating the classic rock. I also don't see why J. Geils Band's "Love Stinks" would fit. There were a handful or two of harder songs that I'd love to hear 'RXP play more often. And, good to know that they have more than 5 songs in their library from the core '90's artists.

Not surprisingly, it's more fun to hear them on CBS-FM. They make you say, "Oh, wow," while 'RXP makes you say, "Oh, boy..."

The previous post does not seem to make any sense.

I think he's just trying to reach 10,000 posts as fast as he can. ;D

The downside to the whole "past 3 decades" thing is the fact that only one Ramones song made it in. Nothing by the Sex Pistols, and no pre-80s David Bowie. I know that some of those songs are still in RXP's rotation, which is kind of a shame.

To explain my post: How many times (as has been reported here) has a modern-rock song on WRXP played right next to Van Halen or Bruce Springsteen? Hence, my "oh boy" comment... If I get to 10,000 posts... well, if it happens, it happens... ;)

Similar to what I was saying. My thoughts on the countdown:

1. The songs from the '80s on the countdown do not fit together- you have the Smiths, Tom Petty, Van Hagar, new wave, GNR, and J. Geils' "Love Stinks".

2. There were a number of songs that before I had only dreamed of 'RXP playing and would like to hear them mix into regular rotation (Danzig "Mother", Monster Magnet "Space Lord", several Tool tracks).

Basically, if the listeners really voted on the countdown (which if you look at various portions of it, it seems clear they did), 'RXP should take clues about how to alter their playlist. Example- Tool's "Aenema" was in the top 300 and I had never heard 'RXP play Tool prior to the countdown, "Them Bones" was one of the highest-ranked Alice In Chains songs even though I had rarely heard it.

One of my favorite songs of all time ironically is at the BOTTOM at #1019, World Party's "Way Down Now!" :)

And don't forget Bruce Springsteen! "Pink Cadillac" in the top half of the countdown? Are you freakin' kidding me? And Bruce has eight songs total on the countdown!

If you want a microcosm of WRXP's programming, look no further than the eighth and final Springsteen song on the countdown at No. 1017.
