WRZN GOES TALK - ADDS OCALA TRANSLATOR

According to the information I have, WRZN will make the switch October 28th. The Ocala FM translator may be on the air re-broadcasting WRZN as early as this week if all goes well and as planned. I was told The Cigar Dave Show was supposed to debut on WRZN this past Saturday, however it was delayed for reasons unknown to me. It may be on the air this Saturady.

Also, having made the switch yesterday, WDVH-AM has a few "bugs" to work out which is normal and to be expected with any format change. However, Jim Brand is a professional and will have AM 980 sounding smooth as silk in no time.

980 has been broadcasting dead air all afternoon. I hadn't listened since the first day of the talk format.

Hasn't WMOP been using 100.1? They have a pretty good signal.

WMOP is no longer using the 100.1 frequency; However, there are four translator applications pending for new Ocala signals. Perhaps WMOP may take advantage of securing one of the new frequencies once they are approved. The new parent station for W261BA is WRZN, and I believe there may be a slight power increase on the translator.

Oh man, they have to rely on the 900 signal at night, again, which means you have to live within 20 feet of the tower, right? ;) :D That's the only way you'll get the baseball scores at night.

I tried tuning in 980 duing the day in Chiefland but just heard a lot of static. Way up the band I can hear WAJD on 1400, noisy but can be heard. I figured WDVH's 5kw low on the band might get out better. Good move for them to pick up the Ocala translator.

Up to now Arbitron has reported the WDVH AM and FM simulcast under the WDVH AM callsign, assuming more listeners in the Metro G-ville area. In theory, that would prop up the FM's status to advertisers even though they would not know how many listeners there actually were in Levy, Gilchrist, and Dixie counties. Interesting to see how this 3kw Class A will do standing on its own.

In the future the WDVH AM simulcast will include WRZN AM (in Hernando, Citrus County, not even in the Gainesville DMA but necessary to qualify for the Ocala translator) and the Ocala FM translator, but not WDVH-FM which would be a bit confusing to any diary holders out in the DMA. Wonder if a call sign change is in the works for one of them??

HOT-720? Who knows what they will call themselves. I heard Gene this morning giving a countdown to his final show tomorrow so whatever it is, it's happening this weekend. Halloween stunt on Monday ??? Live remote from Hades?

It could be a stunt; However, if WRZN is actually going to become "Hot 720", the first thing that comes to mind is either CHR or Hot Talk. Additionally, the countdown has begun regarding WDVH-FM 101.7. It may be that WDVH-FM will become a part of a three station simulcast including WRZN, WDVH and WDVH-FM. If this is what is planned, then 101.7 would contribute the Levy and Gilchrist County numbers to the overall Gainesville and Ocala metro stations, which will increase total market share, same as what Wind FM is doing with WNDN Chiefland.

Speaking of stunts: WDVH-FM 101.7 was playing a ticking clock with occasional female voice "101.7", various beeps and burps, an explosion now and then, with some instumental music of various genres fading in and out. So as Mark suggests, they may become part of the tri-mulcast or something else. I heard them this afternoon as I was driving through but I cant hear them at home. If anyone hears something else Saturday or Sunday please post here.

It's "Hot 720" with a contemporary music format. I guess this isn't the final format but if it is it's borderline ingenious in that they are giving up the 720 listeners in return for the ability to broadcast a sellable format in Ocala on FM.

101.7 is still doing the clock ticking thing. They mention being closer to the station and "autumn season". Early Christmas?

What you described is the only scenario that really makes any sense if "Hot" is going to be the actual format. However, the translator, once it is on the air, is the only signal that will have 24/7 coverage in Ocala, so, for this reason, I question why the moniker "Hot 720" is being used rather than "Hot 100.1" since Ocala is the target area. I'm listening right now and it sounds like a Saturday night hot mix show.

Mark, are you listening off the air or do they have a stream we can hear?

I spoke with their engineer a couple of months ago and he told me he would be doing the things he had been wanting to do at WRZN for a long time. Tony, looking at your pix on the cflradio.net, how long ago were those taken? Are they going to try to resurect the trailer or get a little storefront sales office/studio in town somewhere?

I'm listening off and on to the over-the-air signal using a cheap AM radio receiver as I am within the 2mV/m daytime signal contour. I am unaware of an audio stream. WRZN has not had a website for years, and I have been unable to identify a new one.
