WSAN

I was wondering if anyone out there knows why WSAN was not included in the Spring ratings. They were rated in Winter 07 with an .05 so the reason wasn't because they were a new station. No matter, there has been a dramatic drop since they went all sports, and could changes be in the air unless something turns around soon?

I think WSAN should go back to their progressive-alternative format of yesteryear!

Yea, but that was in the days before FM became king of the airwaves!

To tell you the truth, I was surprised a decision was made for them to go all sports given the fact that WEEX was simulcasting on 1320. What more sports could the Valley want? The formats are so similar.

For a time I wondered weather 1320 was going to change to another format. Now if THAT would happen or is possible, SAN could get the upper hand on WEEX, given it has greater coverage. But the way things are now, it might be a tough road for WSAN.

Hey, I'm just making an observation. I wish them the best, but I still think there is sports overkill on the AM around here.

when i worked there pt in 1982 the overnight dude could not say the call letters right and they came out as w.a$$.a.n. it was too funny he didn't last that long...but when you were making big mac's while running the board whaddya expect...would you like fries with your order????

hey todd...did you work with neil frank back then? as for WSAN as an album rock station! miss those days.wonder what happend to john wood of the wooden sound machine.74 to 78. remember the "your music box" slogan? ....give sports radio 1470 a chance.what's the last resort...oldies 1470 WSAN??? hmmmmmm....

no i worked there when boss hogg the burger flipper bought it from ruel musselman's family and changed it to country. i do remember your music box and i loved when they air national lampoon's radio hour.

and the king biscuit flower hour! one show had elton john in concert.i lost the tape of that! so you were there in it's country days...you must have worked with joe mc clain.the overnight guy was it joe serfazza??? i think he was at WSAN during it's country format.i knew him from WMUH in 82.let's see how many format changes were there after "the album station" ohhhh i'd say about 7 or 8.as for joe serfazza??? he had a tough time saying the letter W as DOUBLE U....just thought i pass that on!

I don't believe Joe Serfazza worked at WSAN any time while it was country. Jon Flook worked overnights, then I was the overnight guy (Dave Silverstein) after working evenings, following Bob Grayson's "Nightline." Here's a picture of the airstaff, around 1981:

Chuck Henry did mornings much of that time, Jim Cameron was PD and split middays with Ed Baumer, Joe McLaine afternoons, Arnie Kriner (Cameron's buddy from Williamsport) nights.

Here's a picture of a WSAN Country license plate, Xmas card with full staff names and the AOR days Listener card:

Great pictures and memories!

1470 is a wasted signal, I still maintain my stand at beginning of this post.

I am not an expert on radio, and I may be way off base. The real problem these days is that big corporations own several stations in one market. God forbid if 790 gets competition and it won't since 1470 is the sister station of 790. If it weren't, I could see talk on 1470 from a more balanced viewpoint, not just wall to wall conservative that is on WAEB.
Maybe even some psychology shows mixed in...

I guess I just set myself up for some "you are nuts" comments!

wow! cool pic's there dave!!! i miss the 'ol WSAN building! so joe serfazza must have been there in it's short lived unforgettable format....as for another talk station on 1470??? i doubt that.the fox sports format is ok for now.since some of us "oldies" fans got used to oldies online....well it's better than nothing! i'm still trying to find "john wood" if that was his real name? he did an outstanding soul show "the wooden sound machine" in the mid to late 70's on WSAN sunday nights from 10pm to 2am.his last airshift was in october of 78.his program got canned in feb 78 in favor of dr demanto 10pm and at midnight the jazz album countdown.

Well, now that I'm feeling really old... anyone remember "The Voice of the Turtle" on WSAN in the '60s? Dave Fox... Denny Somach? *tap* *tap* Anyone out there? :)

I worked with Dave Fox at WGPA. Man, that boy could eat. I'll never forget the time that he put pizza wrapped in aluminum foil in the microwave. As the microwave started to melt, he pulled the flaming foil out of the microwave and threw it on the carpeted floor. Let me tell you, microwaves smell really bad when they melt and the smoke was horrible. We were running around opening up all the windows and in the midst of all of that with the smoke alarms blaring, Dave says "do you think the pizza's okay to eat?" This is a guy who would bring in a loaf of bread, a pile of lunch meat, a 1 pound Hershey's bar and 2 liter bottle of soda and they would pretty much be gone by the end of his shift. What a guy, may he R.I.P.

The microwave shenanigans continue at WGPA. I will never stick anything in there.

i have a friend that is a distribution center manager and he had chinese guy put a dead robin he found outside in the microwave at the warehouse and ate it. yummmm...tastes like chicken

dave fox almost gave me an air shift at WSAN in the fall of 1979! until mickey haggerty came along in 1980. and changed the format to AC.speaking of WSAN alumi....what about joe swanson!!! yeah man....BTW...i don't feel old at all.the music keeps me young! i have to tell my doctor that.

Anyone remember Ned Teeter and Joe Cusimano? Both part timers in the early 80s at WSAN. Around the time of that Todd Mayor guy.

cusimano...i remember him from dubya a-e-b. we used to call him "cujo" from that movie about the mad dog. He was doing nights back in 1984 and I came in on a sat morning and the control room smelled like remnants of a mexican restaurant if you knoe ehst i mean. I was being a smart ass on the air and referred that he may have been eating at chi chi's. the manager of chi chi's was listening and called waeb wxkw gm mike kirtner and i got whacked. i thought it was funny. oh well i ended up in washington dc making almost triple the money. the valley never paid jocks well.

Joe Cusimano is selling real estate these days and still doing an occasional commercial or voice over.

Mike Kirtner was a piece of work. I helped record all of the carts for their change to "Light 104" and was told that if nobody knew what I was doing, I would be guaranteed a job on the new format. We did the dubbing at his house and NOBODY knew what was coming. The new format hit and a day later, I was gone. Of course, I was young and naive enough to believe what he had told me. Live and learn.

another golden delite weekend on "LITE-104" WAEB-FM allentown....one of the worst formats the lehigh valley ever had!!! mickey haggerty couldn't say "MIX ON 96" anymore.it got better as LAZER-104.1.kudo's to brian mc kay for making the lazer a ratings hit! 2nd worst format on FM....HOT 99.9! anyone for a dance?
