WSAN

Legend has it that Brenda Casner locked the studio at the old lite 104 and played alternative music in addition to making a speech about how commercial radio -----. She was fired of course and stayed on WMUH for years. Now she's in Florida on a Public station down there. Can anyone confirm this story? Somebody told me this a while back but I have no verification.

As I recall - and I could be wrong - there wasn't even a real latch or door know on the Lite 104 studio door (unless one had been installed after I exited) so I don't know how she would have locked herself in the studio other than barricading the door. I had never heard of this incident, but who knows?

This is the version I heard of the 104 story.

The 104 jock was angry about the format change and about how they moved her shift from evenings to middays rather abruptly.

She apparently played a rock song not in 104's approved library, made an on-air statement about her displeasure with the format and quit on the air. I never heard about any baricade situation.

This version of the story came from a former co-worker on mine who was board-op-ing at WAEB-AM when the incident occurred. The PD called the hotline when he heard what was going on, on-air. The board op on the AM side picked up the hotline (only one hotline for both AM and FM) and answered, "AM!" The PD yelled, "Get me FM!"

Speaking of interesting ways to *quit*.... I recall one jock at the old WSAN building at the Whitehall Mall who, when he quit... unscrewed every light bulb in the building as he left. The man had class!

i miss brenda casner! she started at WMUH in 1981 as i and many talented folks did! she had a cool show called "the rock and roll crumbs"....and early type oldies music show.and new stuff mixed in.hope she drops by the valley soon.

She's loving it in Florida. I saw her three years ago and she was in a vitriolic state about visiting here. I said, "The LV is not that bad." "Smile!" She just did'nt seem to agree.

Well, now that I'm feeling really old... anyone remember "The Voice of the Turtle" on WSAN in the '60s? Dave Fox... Denny Somach? *tap* *tap* Anyone out there? :)

Coolest job I ever had. Didn't pay much. Replacing Bob Ross as the all night guy were big shoes to fill. One day, early in my tenure, I was still just a weekend guy. Denny Somach had a comittment and I sat in one afternoon for him. He didn't mention to me until the day I was to do his show "Oh, Andy, by the way, you'll need to interview Chick Corea." My first radio interview. Damn if I wasn't nervous. I only had about 100 hours flying time and never had to do so many commercials. I was used to doing 20 - 40 minute sets in the wee hours. Plus interview Chick. Ouch!

You can still hear Bob on WMUH most Fridays 8 to 11 pm

i enjoyed bob ross's saturday night punk rock show on WSAN! well it was sort of a punk rock/hard rock...etc...well i hope to see brenda cas soon...BTW i recently returned to WMUH.look forward to doing more radio there....check out the light and fluffy show tuesday mornings 2am to 6am with alum of 13-KAP! chuck morgan.lot's of 70's & 80's.you'll stay awake too!

I remember my days at WSAN, around 1978 or so. Had just gotten fired across the street at WKAP, and my good friend from college, Bob Fisher, was doing the evening shift there. Bob was able to get me in the door, and I was hired by Dave Fox. I did late evenings, sandwiched between Bob Fisher and John Flook (who always smelled like he'd been smoking WAY too much pot!).

In those days, we had Joe McClaine on in the mornings ("i got out of pop radio because i couldn't stand playing Sugar Sugar by the Archies anymore!"), Dave Fox, Bob Fisher, myself, Karen Zekey (who had also worked with me at WKAP) and John Flook.

I remember they had some crazy punk rock show on Sunday nights, totally wild stuff.

It was a great, exciting station in those days.

Back 2 Brenda Casner

I wish I had the aircheck of her quitting on the air; I can't remember if I heard it 'live' or from her....i think brian mc kay was after her and tried to get her off the air but was unsuccessful.....she broke format for only one song if i recall and the tune was 'waiting for the worms' from pink floyd's the wall............the dumb things that i remember.....i still laugh about it especially the part about the 'pd' calling the hotline; the steam coming out of his ears probably was seen for miles (i would have paid to see that)

It's funny...that old WSAN material. An old co-worker of mine was just starting doing News on WSAN right around the time Fulmer bought the station and flipped it to country. His name is on the staff list but it is spelled wrong. It wasn't Schmidt....it was Steve Schmid.

Was the shift to country right after AOR? Or was there something else in between?

woa! Time warp!

Gads, I remember Bud and Olivia. Didn't know he had passed away.
And WT too. How 'bout that old teletype they kept in the closet?
Me and Bud and Bob Ross took the Hammond B3 out to Kutztown or something for a show and Rick Wakeman trashed it.
If I ever catch up with that guy ...

Anyone remember the xmas party at Sally Stars whadayacallit park in the Poconos? Alex Harvey (and the PA state police) did the entertainment.

I remember spending many nights in the record room searching through stacks of records, many of them imported from Europe. The Roxy shows. I did them all. Even got paid for about half of them. Stage Hand and any thing that needed to get done to put the shows on. "The Tubes" I was on a spot on top of the consession stand. And yes I did get a suppeana from Allony Park, Sally Stars Place where we had our aniversary party with Alex Harvey.
