WSAR

What happened to George Colajezzi??

Stylos is much more interesting, hopefully, Paul G can remake the lineup, including from 5 a.m. on, exception Rob Carolyn, bright, witty, informative, versed on many topics, and gives great lessons or classes in meteorolgy.

Too bad Paul G. won't be able to remake the caller base, which pretty much consists of "The Old and The Crabby!"......most especially the chronic repeat callers who've become "celebrities" in thier own right.

Some of those callers should be breathing their last soon..which could only help the situation..but AM radio will be gone likely by the end of this decade, except in Boston and other major markets where it can still make up a couple of bucks..stations like WSAR are watching the sand in the hourglass run out..

WSAR has the advantage of being the only English speaking station in town. I think it's the only thing that keeps them alive. Where else are people going to go to talk about Fall River? Providence stations couldn't care less. So WSAR does have a formula that works for them. I don't know how much longer it will work. But they aren't dead yet.

But does not the venerable WSAR now have expanded, clear daytime coverage to Falmouth, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, plus a bit more into Rhode Island?

I'm not aware of any signal change. I haven't heard anything. They always reached the Islands anyway. I don't think any signal change would be susbstantial enough to change anything. They are still very focused on Fall River. They haveso few listeners in Rhode Island that it doesn't even show up in the ratings. It's similar to me listening to 1010WINS. The amount of people listening to that station from Rhode Island is probably me and two other guys.

There's a CP to go from 5kw unlimited to 25kw day using an additional tower, and maintaining the 5kw night pattern. The CP is a year old, with 2 years left to build. It'll throw more signal strength over places like Taunton and New Bedford.

Does anyone know if the Karams actually intend to move forward on the CP?

As we've seen in the past.... holding a CP isn't necessarily a guarantee that it will become reality. If that were the case, Greenville would have had a second licensed AM on 1140. :D

I saw the coverage map with the proposed power increase. It mainly focuses on a stronger signal to the Islands and the fishes. I doubt it will even be worth the more expensive electric bill.

The big advantage is signal strength and overcoming noise interference. The electric bill isn't the big expense to worry about, that's pretty minor. It's the cost of putting up another tower that's most likely prohibitive.

I looked at the maps. The increased coverage isn't all that dramatic. It is a little more towards the East and a tiny bit less to the Northwest. Well I hope it works out for them. I think there real disadvanatage as a station is probably that bad dial position. Being almost all the way to the end of the AM band isn't really a power position to have.

I'm thinking that the day power increase to 25 kW will enable WSAR to possibly poach listeners from WBSM. I'm surprised 1420 didn't try for 5 kW at night. The present 2-tower butterfly shaped pattern is one of the strangest I've seen.

If they get a new solid state transmitter and use Dynamic Carrier Control the chances are pretty good their power bill will stay close to the same and maybe go down just a tad.

I didn't expect much going to DCC with a nearly 20-year old Nautel ND-25 but the saving blew me away without losing coverage.
