All of this talk about Neal Boortz brings me to his student-Royal Marshall. The Royal Treatment was a show that started out in the late 1990`s when WSB owned the Programming rights to WCNN-AM in Atlanta. They gave Royal a weekday show and he always thinked Neal Boortz for being his mentor. I remember listening to the Royal Treatment in 1999 and hearing Royal go on and on..... about how Y2K was going to be the end of the world! Scared little old ladies were calling up and put on the air crying. Royal was trying to scare and shock listeners who were not to be nice, able to tell that he was spouting a load of crap. I lost all respect for Royal Marshall on that day. I also recorded these shows, they are still shocking to listen too. Royal was later put on WSB and given a big shot for success. At one time, he almost had a good weekday slot of WSB-AM. They did give him a shot at night and he blew it..... Constantly laughing and saying very insenestive comments. By late 2002, WSB had enough and pulled his show. In my opinion, he will never be on the air with his own show at WSB again.......

Was there even a reason for the above post? Why bring up such trivial things? Geez, goodtimes.. get with the times?

This topic is good discussion. Royal Marshall is a part of one of the top long-time talk shows in Atlanta. It is interesting how they keep letting him laugh and giggle his way through Neal`s show. I can`t bekieve that Neal keeps putting up with it...........

It may be interesting to you, but it's trivial to the rest of us. It is trivial because what you hear of him on the air during Neal's show is such a small part of his job description. It's not his main responsibility to be what you think he should be. He is there -- the primary, most important reason -- is to run the board, make Neal's show as tight as possible for BOTH WSB (local) AND to the affiliates, and make Neal sound good.

Obviously Neal and Cox Radio think he is CURRENTLY doing a good job in THAT respect, regardless of your quibbles about his on-air handling of Y2K, over 8 years ago, that he is worth keeping.

If you don't know what the position of board engineer entails, then there is no point in continuing this discussion untill you do. If you have never worked in a radio station, then you have no idea. I was only a small-time, small-town board op and DJ 30 years ago, but I still have nightmares about timing something wrong... I can't imagine what it's like nowadays balancing local and affiliates.

Cheez-Whiz, dude, get a life!

The topic is a lame discussion. What's wrong "goodtimes", you try calling into Neal's show and got bounced or something? There are plenty of signals in Atlanta and on XM radio, if you don't like WSB then don't friggin' listen.

Kyscott, this is great discussion about longtime members of the Atlanta radio scene. And no, I did not get bounced from calling this show. Most of the folks here have open minds and really enjoy great discussion of people and shows that have meant alot to radio info. Many have added some great insight here...... It is interesting that many feel that this show has changed..... and it has......

By "this show", you mean The Royal Treatment, which hasn't been around since 2005? Even if you do mean Boortz, all shows change. They have to. If they don't, they're Handel on the Law. ;D

I would love to know how this "discussion" has been anywhere close to great.

I like Royal Marshall's style and sure as hell would rather hear him than Herman Cain.

Present company excluded I'm assuming since you don't appear to have an open mind about much. You have an anti-WSB/Boortz/Marshall agenda you are pushing on here.

My dear Kyscott, I actually like WSB and Boortz, etc..... That doesn`t mean that I can`t provide criticism of the show..... In kyscott`s eyes, if you say anything negative about WSB, then you have an "agenda". Kyscott, this is the USA, not Russia. Lighten up and stop making comments about others that aren`t true...... Just because I criticize something, doesn`t mean that I am against it..... grow up p-l-e-a-s-e....... I wonder why Kyscott is so senstive about Cox and WSB.....Hmmmmmmmm.........................

I think it's ironic you are calling me "senstive".

If you AX me, Royal was great until he had to speak at great length. Kind of like a backup QB who looks great holding the clipboard, and then has to go in a game and fails.

He was exposed as shallow, and a very weak command of the English language.

The problem for Royal was, somebody in management at Cox actually listened one time to his show and had it pulled.

Towards, the end of Royal`s show (about 2002) a drunk man called up mumbling something about a Pogo Stick. Royal laughed for about 45 striaght minutes...... Then, on later shows, he would out of nowhere say "Pogo Stick" and start laughing madly. This is just one example of what is show was like.........

Royal has a good voice, and is personable, smart and knowledgeable. What he needed, in my opinion, was a good coach.

At times, he'd be fine. But sometimes he'd make an off-color remark and then start laughing, partially off mike. At other times, he'd lapse into colloquial speech. Bottom line, he was just too undisciplined.

If someone could have worked with him (and who knows, maybe someone did), he could have developed into a good talk show host.

WSB should have shipped him off to their minor league station in Macon....

(Do I see a new thread being brewed here... :D Compare talk radio to baseball. I mean, when Boortz and Hannity were free agents......)
