WSB-AM c. 1950s - Dick McMichael

Does anyone know much about Dick McMichael's days at WSB? I just read that he was the Georgia AP Broadcasters award winner in 1958. He anchored the local TV news here in Columbus for more than a decade and retired in 2000. He just put out his autobiography, too. It's called ""The Newsman".

Dick McMichael has been around Columbus radio and television far longer than just the last decade. If I'm not mistaken, his early days were in radio with WDAK, then his stint with WSB (those may be turned around; I'm not sure) and then he was at WRBL-TV in its heyday as the true "News Leader" in Columbus (the days of George Gingell, Ridley Bell, George Theringer, Doug Wallace, et al). He left TV-3 sometime in the early-mid 80's for WTVM, where he remained a fixture in Columbus TV until his retirement.

When I was at WGSY-FM (Sunny 100) in the early 90's, we had an agreement with WTVM to provide news updates for us (I believe Clear Channel continues this agreement to this day). Chuck Leonard did (and still does) morning news updates, and either Dick or Dee Armstrong (or sometimes Wayne Bennett) would do the afternoon updates. As the afternoon drive guy, I always enjoyed talking to Dick when he would call to record his 'casts.

I'll be picking up my copy of "The Newsman".

Note that the book was self-published.

(Heard many stories about Dick McMichael from a late buddy of mine who worked under his news directorship at WRBL-TV in the late 70s....)

CC still has this agreement. I've produced the Sunny 100 morning show and interacted with Chuck Leonard a few times. These days, I believe it's usually Wayne Bennett in the afternoons.

I have heard that he was a great one in his day at WSB....

The crew and I went to Columbus this summer to interview Dick for the "Dawn of Georgia TV" documentary we're working on. He assembled a group of Columbus TV pioneers and was a true gentleman to us. Their material will be highlights of the show when we're ready to air it. (Fulltime job keeps getting in the way!)

I went to a Rotary club meeting when I was in high school, received some sort of award or recognition. Dick McMichael delivered a news report for the room. I think that was shortly after he retired. Glad to know he's still around (three years after I started this thread).
