WSB AM/WSBB FM - Monday Morning Announcment

They damn well better be scared and staying up all night in cold sweats. They have phoned it in and chilled out on a beach for a decade plus. Nobody there has had to do anything besides add the "and NOW 95.5FM!" to any script in years. The game has changed.

106.7 is putting out a good product that has gotten better all week. I was expecting it to take a while but it's noticeably tighter and faster every time I listen. I haven't needed listen to WSB all week. Occasionally miss it but mostly miss the Metro Traffic people rather than WSB itself.

NOT having to hear Hannity in the afternoon is just kind of good. Kind of relaxing.

May I say that I think it's very telling how, just four days into All News 106.7, WSB has blinked and is making changes.

In truth, they have to be somewhere between "quite concerned" and "scared shitless" that someone else is going to get some eggs from the golden goose that they've owned exclusively since WGST quit trying 15 years ago.

It's almost like they knew how stale they'd become, but never had a reason to change anything until now.

Here's my guess.

5-9 Atlanta's Morning News (unchanged basically)
9-1 Boortz co-hosting with Erickson, until Boortz retires at the end of the year or whatever.
1-3 Clark Howard
3-6 Hannity
6-8 Erickson or a repeat of the AM show or something
8-10 Goldfein
10-1 Dave Ramsey
1-5 repeats of something.

Erickson's problem is that he's green, nobody listening to radio knows who he is, really, and he's got other ambitions. WSB needs to embrace him and push him to a better slot or else they are going to lose him to TV or all the other places he says want him for interviews. Boortz is worn out, ready for beach sand. Putting them together passes the mantle and endorses the new guy in front of all the listeners. Boortz has an ego bigger than the studio so not sure how this would work.

Wildcard guesses:

Boortz cuts back to three days a week, with somebody listed above filling in.

Herman Cain is coming back either to do his snoozefest, I mean show, or to do the same kind of team up with Boortz. Herman is not bad when being interviewed but hosting alone is not his thing. He needs a foil. Or to be the foil.

Jamie Dupree will anchor some sort of political news block. Maybe 12-1, maybe 4-5 or 5-6. The problem with tying down a DC reporter is that they need to be on the move to actually, you know, cover stuff. So stuffing them into a booth for a forced hour or two every day is crippling.

Mark Arum gets his own daily show. Question is whether the TV side will let him. The man has divided attentions.

I've heard from reliable sources they are flipping to AAA to try stealing some of Dave's listeners.

All five!?!

If WSB plays it smart, they'll relegate Hannity to 95.5 FM and go all news in the afternoon from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on WSB-AM.

So my question now is: would more people listen to WYAY during the afternoon dayparts- or would WSB win since it is well known.

Honestly I am loving this 106.7 format. WSB does not deliver news like this station, I will say it again, it reminds me of WBBM in Chicago, to me that is by far the smoothest news station ever. I do miss oldies though...Not AGH...

"92 'ZGC… Atlanta's Old-Time Music Station". 106.7 has done a great job. See my signature.

BOTTOM LINE TO ALL OF THIS: WSB AM/FM is (nearly) the #1 station in the market. WYAY is barely visible at this point. Why would Cox knee-jerk and make changes to WSB based on what WYAY is doing? Seriously, folks.

From the Gumball Rally (1976) Franco: "What's-a behind me is not important"

Also, Cox will never split the AM/FM simulcast. They did it to increase ratings. Splitting will only take a step backwards.

But they continue to do an overall fall in the ratings book (7.5-8.1-7.3). And, I don't really know why they would lose listeners. WYAY hadn't debuted yet, and WGST is crap. So, who knows?

"Daddy? How does WYAY make the news so SMOOTH?"

They shave off a lot of the bullshit...

The guy running the place is the reason for why the station sounds so good. He picked the staff, he designed the format clock, he did everything. The team makes it work, but the PD put it all together. A real pro

Cumulus: McVay- Senior VP of Programming- he is saving the quality of Cumulus stations.
PD: KDKA and WBT. Great experience. 'Nuff Said.
Staff: Some from CNN, and some from Weather Channel. Great Voices.
Fox 5: Dedicated. Determined. Dependable. Especially Ken Cook.
ATLBizChron: Trusted Money voice of the south.
680 The Fan: Recognizable voice of sports in Atlanta.

All compelling parts of AN106.7 (the acronym we should use.)

Did anyone see the full-page WSB Add in the AJC this morning?
"Atlanta's News and Information Station". Yeah, because Hannity is really news & information.

Would that ad be considered an InterCompany transaction?

Isn't that common in news radio for ratings to fluctuate depending on that's going on in the world? It has been relatively light in the world of heavy news since the Japan earthquake.

I agree. AllNews 1067 sounds so much like WCBS-AM and WBBM it is scary. They're fast-paced, non-fluff, professional. I've already re-tuned my clock raido to them, and added them as a pre-set on my portable player.

Boortz is not going to leave before Monica does. He wants to be behind her to slam the door.

Cam somebody do something about Andy Dean? The guy is a joke, absolutely bottom run bush league.

The big announcement? Probably some new segment of the Morning News. They're not going to panic so quick as to change schedules or hosts, though booting off the king of new content would be a good start.

Keep going WYAY; I'm with you all the way.
