WSB Erick Erikson and Atlanta's Evening News

The Atlanta Evening News premiered was today on WSB. It is NOT a news show. It is Erick ranting and raving. He is trying so hard to sound like the syndicated conservative ranters and fails miserably. It is just another conservative talk show with just a little more news.

I actually thought WSB was trying to counter program AN106.7. I think WSB made a mistake ratings wise. Hannity would have better ratings 5-6PM than the new Atlanta's Evening News.

Such a dissapointment.

Maybe they are trying the Fox News (or MSNBC, if you prefer) approach of offering a little more opinion with the news than the other guys who are playing it straight, so as to provide a truly different product and not a weak-sister version of the same thing that would likely draw an unfavorable comparison. WSB has the heritage, but they are already the conservative talker, so if you want to be different than AN106.7's CNN, they can be the Fox News.

That said, they should have kept Hannity on live all three hours.

I agree. Hannity should have stayed. Being honest, the name of the show is misleading... it is not a news show. It is just another talk show that happens to be in afternoon drive with 5-7 minutes of news at the top and bottom of the hour.

I removed WSB from my preset. I am an AN106.7 junkie now. Got totally pissed off when they moved Clark. I hope your ratings taking a dump Cox Media!

I'm sorry, but to me EE is the worst hire WSB has made in many years. He may be good at political blogging, but Radio is not for him. Presentation still matters.

Yes, horrible decision :D with 106 7 having less than 20% of the audience WSB has at 5 and 6 o'clock I'm sure the powers at cox are shaking in their boots

The only two tings left on WSB that interest me are Neal (gone in January) and Jamie Dupree. Jamie's reports from Washington are great. They do not lean one way or the other. He just reports what he sees going on (usually behind the scenes).

Even with the conservative talk market WSB is trying to hit, I think EE and Herman are mistakes.

I too was hoping for a real afternoon drive news show to bookend Scott Slade's Atlanta Morning News.
Condace Pressley would be a great host.

WHY would you counter program a station that has a 1.3 share??? THAT IS PROGRAMMING SUICIDE!

Some thoughts...

1) All-news is a product that has not been offered in ATL in quite some time. Most people aren't radio g33ks like we are, and it will take them time to a) discover the station b) tune into it c) decide that it's something they want to listen to regularly--spoken word isn't like music where you can make a judgment on the music mix 2 or 3 songs in or keep pressing buttons to check on it--you have to build trust and affinity and d) spread what they hear by word of mouth.

2) I could say that AN106.7 has increased its share over 50% over the last two months, but that wouldn't be entirely accurate, either.

3) Local news is one of the few formats that cannot be duplicated or replaced by Pandora, Spotify, satellite, MP3 players, iHeartRadio/TuneIn, etc. In the case of iHeartTuneIn, if you're listening to local news on it, it's in all likelihood on the station in question. The same would apply to local sports (and isn't somebody else flipping to that format soon?). I should note that that's NOT the case with syndicated talk or other syndicated programming. If I don't want to listen to Rush on WGST WSB, I can listen to him on another station, for whatever reason (TOH newscasts, time, etc.).

I listened too and it was really disappointing. If they're going to have a two hour news block, then they need to do a two hour news block. They should split the AM and Fm signals from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and put Hannity on one and all news on the other. The run Erick at 6:00 p.m.

Erikson is not my cup of tea.

That said, what they have created is not a news show, it's more of an expanded opening talk show show segment where Erik can ramble and rant on and on about who he knows, what they said, and how and why they are doing it wrong.

I think the show may stay through the election, but I will be surprised if this lasts much after Nov. 6.

I agree with most of the sentiment expressed -- I would suggest that what WSB has created is something closer to the Kimmer than Dennis O'Hayer. When I first heard SB was going to do a two-hour drive time news show, I was really hoping for a double-dose of "60 at 6"...

From The Atlanta Business Chronicle, September 27, 2012:

"WSB will add an evening news block from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to compete with Cumulus’ “All News 106.7” WYAY"

The newspaper has been misled by Cox Media Group and WSB. There is NOT
a "news block" from 5-7pm. It is simply the Erik Erickson program, moved to
drive time. There is only the usual Top and Bottom of the Hour newscasts, along
with several traffic reports. For WSB to call this a "news block" is incorrect.
What Scott Slade and company provide from 5am to 8:30am is a TRUE news
block, continuous news and traffic. Who does WSB think it is fooling by calling
this two hour segment in the afternoon a "news block". In no way does this even
attempt to compete with "All News 106.7 WYAY. Someone needs to inform the
Atlanta Business Chronicle about their wording.

I'm a political conservative.. I get EE's position and message.. but I would much rather have a break in the message for some real news from 5-7. The old 60@6 show was very well done and it was really bad news to me when it went away. The news talent at GST had to work a lot harder to get their message out because of the signal limitations they had at 920 vs WSB. I hope they tweak it to be more of a news show vs EE.
