WSB FM HD2 is an awesome station. It is the closest thing Atlanta has to classic hits. It reminds me of the old Peach 95 from way back in the day. Kind of before my time. There are enough frequencies on the air waves here in Atlanta, especially since HD began, to satisfy the tastes of all genres of music. Do people in their 50s and 60s and 70s supposedly not buy any merchandise? I am only 45 and man, I hope you old people haters remember that if we are blessed we will one day be old as well. I guess when we turn on the radio, there will be nothing for us either?
 
People in the older age brackets do still by things but are set in their ways on what they will buy so are less influenced by radio and tv ads. i am getting close and i dont pay attention to ads i shop on price, quality and just dont buy stuff for little reason like i did when younger.
 
IMHO a large part of Atlanta's radio's issues come from a lack of market covering stations both AM and FM. Atlanta was much smaller in the 1930's and 1940's when most of the big AM signals were allocated and even in the 1960's when most of the big FM's were assigned. Then after school integration in which a lot of whites left the city, plus a large population growth thanks to Atlanta's airport and "peaceful integration" (Birmingham suffered greatly image wise due to the Church bombing) the suburbs really expanded. With the multiple local governments there was no large scale planning or transit development resulting in one of the worst cases of urban sprawl in the nation. Plus being close to Chattanooga, Birmingham, and the Greenville SC markets has not helped. Phoenix AZ has a really competitive FM market with around 16 good commercial market covering FM signals:

I find it interesting that all the experts on the buying activities of the elderly are younger folks who assume they know something about being old.

I'm sitting here this morning thinking about the things I have bought in the last five years that I never, never ever purchased before in my entire life. A few of them are things you buy because you are old and never needed when you were young. But much of what I am looking at are things I always wanted but too many dollars were tied up raising kids, and then trying to fund our retirement plan.

When you get old enough to know the "old enough" spend their money on, you have become old enough they don't survey you or ask you to serve on "the advertising committee".

Now, if you will excuse me, I must run to the hardware store or maybe the big box store and pick up some woodworking tools and supplies. I'm building an amoire for my wife.... a project that seems to have a life all its own.
 
I am 50 years old. I spend money on things. I still buy the latest and greatest phone that is out. I want the latest in DVR technology. I buy kitchen items because of a new found love of cooking. I like to travel. There are many things that I spend money on and am influenced by advertising.

What is different that when I was younger? If I see something on TV that I am interested it, I immediately go to the web to research the item. I do not impulse buy much anymore. I do compare reviews of items before I purchase them. I spend money, but it is planned and usually well thought out.

Recently, I commented on another thread (maybe the Atlanta TV board) that an episode of ABC World News with Diane Sawyer had all pharmaceutical ads. Even the local spots were pharmaceutical. That really spoke to me in what advertisers think we spend our money on. I am 50. I do not yet need the latest and greatest catheter. I do not yet need little blue pills. And, I am not interested in an alarm system in case I fall in the bathtub. I lead my life no differently than I did at 40 years old.

I know, I am speaking to the choir here. I just have to vent. When I turned 50 suddenly the junk mail that I get changed to geezer mail. AARP, bathtubs for the disabled, and assisted living facilities. Oh... and lots of senior citizen life insurance plans.

Did I mention that I will be looking for a new car next year? But, the shows that I watch don't advertise new cars. I have to look around on the internet. I have to actually go find information on the products because my money is not young enough.
