Now that's a first! In a way, that's probably good. AM IBOC is problematic, and maybe that will serve as a wake-up call that this may not be the best way to implement AM HD!<P ID="signature">______________

If I recall, there is also a Colorado station that turned of the IBOC because of interference to another station. Station was somewhere in the 1100's dont remember exactly the freq

Think again!!
Not being the CE at WSB I can not for certain say it was 790 complaints that lead to WSB turning off the IBOC. It may be that they are smart enough to wait until there is a 24 hour workable digital system. But I heard from their staff that there were complaints. WSB's tower is in a dense population area, and I can assure you that their analog signal kills 790 for several miles radius of the tower. With the IBOC on, things could only be worse.

Here in Dallas when KRLD has IBOC on, there is a lot of hiss. Why?

Interesting point, I have the same thing on WIBC on 1070 in Indianapolis in my Jeep Grand Cherokee...they run IBOC. However I don't have the hiss on WNDE at 1260 and they have IBOC. WIBC is directional during the day, as I believe KRLD is also. WNDE is not...might have something to do with directional arrays or frequency?

I got WSB for a few miles up and down I-285 on their second harmonic, 1500 KHz.
Their parking lot did not look too densely populated when this <a target="_blank" href=http://maps.google.com/?t=h&ll=33.844328,-84.252852&spn=0.002557,0.004742&t=h>sat pic</a> was taken.
Notice how all the cars are staying far away from the tower except for a brave van or SUV on the left and an eighteen wheeler being sliced in half by its shadow.<P ID="signature">______________

The tower is located in a shopping center....there are quite a few people there at any given time in the daytime. The surrounding area, I think, would easily qualify as "dense, urban." That means lot's of apartments and homes.
And what is your point about the 2nd? EVERY 50 Kw transmitter has a second which can be heard a mile or two. I'll bet my last dollar WSB's second harmonic is legal or better.
 
If you are hearing a hiss in your radio on a station with IBOC, then the problem is in your receiver. There are no known problems with IBOC transmission, so the problem is at your end... Open your receiver up, and you may find 2 cats in heat inside your radio. That could easily explain the hissing sound you hear.
In reality, you probably have a better than average receiver with a wider bandwidth front end. You are partially hearing the digital noise. Or it could be spectral regrowth. It could be a lot of things. AM IBOC in order to work assumes a lot of things that aint neccessarily so.
