They corrected it after commerical break. John Pruitt accidentally reported that Tony Dungy had committed suicide, the teleprompter had left out the words, "son of."

No excuse for that faux pas. At least they corrected it. By the way, I'm from Charlotte, I read the AJC online for the Braves.
Edited by karaokelegend on 02/18/06 06:58 PM.

We should cut the anchors a little slack. Given the pressures of the studio environment at most TV stations, I'm surprised they don't make more errors. You have to maintain eye contact with the camera, where the teleprompter is. Stuff on the teleprompter is often misspelled. You have people hollering in your ear. You have floor directors giving your cues. You have the realization that HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE WATCHING YOUR EVERY MOVE, and if an error is made by the producers or technical crew, it's YOUR face onscreen, not theirs.

I tried to do an audition tape some years ago. It didn't take but a couple of attempts to realize it wasn't my game, nor would it ever be. I did local news on the radio, but that's an entirely different animal. I have a lot of respect for the ones who can do it well.

I agree. This was not John Pruitt's fault at all. He was given information on a teleprompter that he hadn't had a chance to vet himself. That's the risks that occur in a breaking news situation and he corrected it within minutes. The sports department here freaked out when they heard the false news so they wanted me to make a call to John and report it.

I actually wasn't blaming Pruitt at all, after I read rhe article again and realized that the teleprompter goofed.
