WSB News Imaging More Aggressive

Has anyone been listening to WSB's promos about Atlanta's Morning News and the intro to their newscasts? They have become really aggressive with All-News 106.7 still hanging around. They even run sweepers within the hourly newscasts, and I'm not talking about between the news and the traffic/weather; I'm talking about between 2 stories.

WSB's promos and sweepers are clearly designed to reinforce that WSB is the market's station for news. The Atlanta's Morning News promos even say, "All News, All News", ostensibly referring to WSB in the morning but apparently to try to steal the All News image from 106.7.

At least that's my take. And I like it because competition is good, and there's too little of it in radio in light of consolidation.

It sounds odd to me, as they interrupt the newscast to tell you they are the leader in news, only to go to the next story. You could have told us a headline in that time. And there isn't any more news than before. Give me back Jeff Hullinger...he was fantastic doing news on WSB.

Cox did exactly that with WDBO-FM in Orlando. As soon as a program gets over with or takes a commercial, they immediately begin running a news update and a traffic and weather report.

While WSB is updating their imaging, AN106.7 has not changed theirs much since the third day of broadcasting. They have recently added an additional news sounder coming out of the bottom of the hour ABC news. It duplicates the one coming out of the top of the hour news. Basically, they are committing the same sin as WSB... go into ABC news with a sounder and leave ABC news with a another version of the same sounder. ABC is 120 seconds long at the top of the hour and 90 seconds long at the bottom. The "same sounding" sounders are too close together.

Bottom line, if AN106.7 was using a better news sounder package, it probably would not be so noticeable.

As rickyradio said, it all does smell of the WSB/WGST rivalry from years past. A little old fashioned local rivalry between two stations usually makes for good radio.... at least for us radio geeks. :)

As the promo on AN106.7 says: We Sound Better

WSB should thank their lucky stars that Atlanta is PPM. Just imagine the confusion with diaries if 106.7 had used We Sound Better as a slogan back in the old diary days.
