WSB-TV News technical foulups

I can't understand how such a professional broadcaster such as COX can tolerate the consistant technical screwups during their newscasts. It makes them look as if they're the training-ground for the rest of the market.
You'd think the talent would be screaming bloody-murder at being made to look silly night after night.

I believe WSB-TV has installed the Ignite production automation system. It automates the positions of Director, Technical Director, Audio Operator, CG/Graphics operator etc.; putting more Americans in broadcasting out of work. I guess it's either corporate greed...or WSB/Cox is so financially strapped that they just can't afford to pay staff. You figure it out. Looks and sounds like it's blowing up in their face, and rightfully so. They're about to hand the #1 title to WAGA/FOX5.

Name ONE area - other than ratings - that WSB news has over 5 or 11.

Used to be they were best at breaking news or spot news (fires, murders, etc); I think 5 is just as good.

Their sports is the worst in town, even worse than 46. Their Sunday night sports wrapup show is just awful.
Glenn Burns is fine, but not clearly the end-all, be-all. Paul Ossmann is certainly more of a personality. (I do like the channel 2 minute-by-minute storm tracker, though.)
Their investigate unit cant shine the I Team's shoes. Mark Winne is a caricature of Dale Russell.
The technical execution is sloppy, as has been noted many times.
The set is the most "vanilla plain" in town
The graphics/anims are no better than 3rd or last place.
Other than Belcher, I dont know of a channel 2 reporter who is distinguishable from the rest.
Weekend anchor John Bachman looks like he just got out of a fraternity rush.

It must be maddening to be Cal Callaway or Budd McEntee.

Ask anybody about the history of WSB and they will tell you they're always first. The station has the Ignite production automation system. They're not the only station in the country that has this problem. Many stations in different markets have had the same problem across the board. WPXI owned by Cox and NBC affiliate in Pittsburg are going through the same problem. Other stations in different cities have the same thing. There Nothing new about Ignite production system.

Glen Burns and Ken Cook are the most popular because of they've been around for a long time, and know their weather material. Paul Ossmann is great as well too!

Channel 2's Investigative team is top notch they do some good stories, and FOX 5's I Team is tops too.
Channel 2's Is known for breaking news, murders, crime, fires... Channel 2 is always first on the scene with every detail.
Channel 2's Set is very top notch design by fxgroup, and not only that but Channel 5's last set was design by them, and so was CBS46's set durning the Clear News era. Check their website out......http://www.fxgroup.tv/portfolio/customsets/

Channel 2's Graphic package comes from giant octopus which did the graphic package for 11Alive. http://www.giantoctopus.com/splash.html

There nothing wrong with WSB, but some technical issues, but there news is still the same, with the same people in the evening, and they're #1 across the board!

Cox is not broke, but might be tighten the purse strings unlike 11Alive Gannett who going VJ route.

As for the News Directors Marian Pittman has nothing to worry about until Monica and John retires. Budd McEntee been at Channel 5 since 1991, and his team does a good job. Cal Callaway needs to find a solution for 11Alive~

The Ignite system has been a train wreck everywhere it's been implemented that I am aware of. WSB looks better than most stations I have seen with the system.

If the technical issues impede the delivery of their #1 news product, they will not remain at #1. I think I've seen a promo on FOX 5 where they claim to be #1. Maybe in some narrow demographic, but clearly they are on the way up. And WSB is, or will be on the way down if they don't get serious about competing and quit trying to do it on the cheap by automating good people out of a job.

Back when I started in the television business, my first job was at a NBC/CBS affiliate. I was a part-time Production Assistant and part-time Master Control Operator (they were both different departments, I was the only one that actually did both.) When an opening in Master Control came about, I applied and got the job. My manager, who was the Production Manager and Station Manager, told me, in not so many words, that I was a great disappointment to him because I decided to join Master Control and not with the production department since “We will always need production people for the news, and we can just outsource Master Control anytime we want.”

So the point of that story is, I guess it’s just not Master Control now that is being outsourced due to automation and hubs, but production departments now.

All I can say now is, thank god I don’t work for local television anymore, as it’s slowly becoming like a dinosaur.

Internet.

My prediction is that TV and Radio will never go away, but it will become like the train. For instance...until the 70s the train industry was HUGE. Than it started to disappear. People said that trains would soon be a thing of the pass, but as you see, that hasn't happened. This is what will happen to TV and radio. It will be around, but it won't be as huge as it use to be.

The Net isn't all it's cracked up to be, my friend. What do you find on it now? (apart from porn, doofus)

That's right. TV shows, movies, radio station streams, or discussion and commentary thereof. What would the Net even be without all that? Besides, anybody remember the dot-com bust in the 90s? People thought the Internet was everything then, too. ;)

I take offense to the doofus part...anyways... ;)

Okay, look at how everything has snowballed... first off, we had news via the radio, than news via theatre (newsreels), than news via television, now look at it now, news via the net.

News via the radio - still around but not as much as it use to be
News via the theatre - gone
News via the television - still around, but for how long?
News via the internet - it's here, and it's growing

I believe that we will get our main source of news via the net, and entertainment will be a mixture of internet (plus porn) and television (HD porn)
