WSB-TV replaces parade with fireworks

Months after WSB-TV announced they were ditching the parade the station has produced for 47 years, they are picking up the coverage of the Lenox Square fireworks...in High Definition. WGCL has aired the Lenox Square fireworks since 2000 (7/4/2000 was when Channel 46 officially took the WGCL callsign), and WXIA aired them for years before that.

The reason WSB cited for canning the parade was HD. That was defininently not true, since they are covering the fireworks in HD like they did the parade. Why not just tell the truth, and just say that the liability insurance rates for producing the parade went up through the roof? (What I believe is the reason). I don't the parade production cost (not including the TV coverage) cost that much, Many small towns with very small populations put on parades all of the time, and there often is little to no cost (and no one is worried about liability insurance). It doesn't add up.

Why doesn't WGCL have the fireworks this year at Lenox Square???

Actually, it does add up...Small town - less than 10,000 people. Metro Atlanta - 5,314,283. Small towns don't have to worry about major police protection, they don't have to worry about large crowds, they don't have to worry about closing down main arteries in the city and diverting the traffic. So, it does make sense...also TV production cost are high (esp. if it's being broadcast in HD.) Not only do you have to worry about paying the anchors, production crew, but also satellite time. You also have to worry about the equipment in the field and back at the studios. So it makes sense that they are doing away with the parade and going with fireworks, that are being done by someone else. They just have to worry about the Television aspect of it now.

WOW, a major city with no 4th of July parade?

The implication is Atlanta is a major city. It is not. Atlanta is a large city but far from a major city.

Atlanta is the 8th largest metropolis. I think that in itself makes is a MAJOR city. New Orleans and St. Louis are large cities.
