WSB-TV shows suspect getting hit by police on repeated loop

WSB-TV's news director needs to resign. Someone at the station showed incredibly poor judgement.

This afternoon during the 5 PM newscast, WSB interrupted to cover a police chase. When the suspect got out, he was hit by a police cruiser. Although the suspect was not injured (and was captured), WSB proceeded to replay the video of the guy getting hit over and over and over again over the next two hours.

When the guy was hit, WSB should have pulled away, and the never should have replayed the video. To add insult to injury, WSB placed stills (including the moment the guy got hit) on their website.

WSB needs to have GM Bill Hoffmann on camera Monday at 5 PM issuing an apology. The news director (or whoever was in charge at the time) needs to resign. They need to think about how they would react if it was one of their kids being mowed down or killed on live television, and the video images were repeated over and over again. Also, WSB could be sued big time by the suspect or the family for emotional distress.

I thought everyone learned their lesson after an incident in Los Angeles about ten years ago where a guy killed himself, and it was carried on live TV.

1. The guy is a criminal. While I don't think he would sue, there is always someone that would. Regardless, WSB should not be showing someone getting hit, let alone repeating the tape over and over again.

2. Let's take out the fact that the guy is a criminal for a minute. If anyone (cop or not) hit someone you loved, and a local TV station broadcast it live (and then repeated the video on an infinite loop), you would be mad at that station.

3. What WSB did was in poor taste, no matter the cirumstances that led up to it. They owe their viewers an apology.

If the suspect was hurt badly or killed it would be a different story, but he jumped right up and kept running. If he was seriously injured WSB would not have kept running the clip. As it turned out, the video was very compelling. Trust me, the other stations wish they had the same video.

Bingo. You didn't see many television replays of that rollover crash where the suspect was thrown across the interstate and run over by three or four cars. You can, however, probably still find it on YouTube and a bazillion other video sharing sites. So it gets shared with the masses anyway.
