WSB-TV's Greg Stone Retires

It's mentioned briefly in the thread below, but Greg Stone, WSB-TV's general manager, is retiring after 16 years running WSB and 43 years working for Cox.

I do believe WSB when they say this was Greg's decision although WXIA is claiming otherwise. But Greg is 65 or 66, and the TV landscape is changing. He probably figures that now is the time.

One potential earthshaking change, and possibly someone has mentioned this, is that Nielsen will change the way it measures Atlanta TV. Now, the household ratings are based on a meter attached to the set, but individuals in the household fill in a diary.

Arbitron's People Meter will pick up the viewing by the individuals in the household. People tend to write in the diary the more familiar stations, such as WSB, when they might be watching WGCL. This has really been a problem with cable networks.

In the other markets with the People Meter, the big well-known stations lost significant ratings (in demographics), and the smaller stations and cable networks increased.

WSB and WAGA seem to have the most to lose when People Meters arrive in Atlanta this summer.

I heard that Neilson and Arbitron are parting ways with the PPM, but I may be wrong.

Cox (on the radio side) initally refused to participate in the Houston trials for PPM. I don't know if they changed their mind or not.

The diary system is nowhere near honest. People just write something down in them and mail them back. People just do it for the cash. You are not going to get honest answers, period.

PPM, on the other hand, will be able to track any TV, radio station, or in-store PA system with information encoded in the audio signal. While this will produce true, honest answers, you have to make sure people carry the device around with them (the technology will tell if they do or not).

I saw him do an editorial on his last night at WSB...?

I thought they cut that stuff out in 1979? Has he been doing a Sunday evening editorial all these years?

I actually kind of like having the GM do editorials...something different.

Yep, he's been doing an editorial for quite a while now. Couldn't tell you exactly how long, but I remember it being for several years.

Arbitron's PPM will be designed so if its totally immobile for a certain amount of time, it will switch off and not measure ratings until it's moved again. So an employee couldn't get a hold of one and just set it in front of a radio or TV.

However, you could tape a PPM to a ceiling fan and it should get around that.

And there you have the flaw inherent in the system! But its lightyears better than diaries.
