WSB vs. WGST

I switched back and forth today between Wgst and WSB this morning in my car. There was a clear difference. Boortz had a funny and entertaining show. It was just a fun place to hang out. It was real conversation. On GST the conversation was forced. It was not a natural, guys hanging around the water cooler, conversation that would take place. It was awkward, uncomfortable, and not enjoyable to be around. This is not abnormal for WGST. Just listen to the Kimmer show for 10 minutes if you can possibly bare it. Am I alone here in my thoughts? Does management have a clue over there? So my question is, Do you think WGST is a tax write off and they are intentionally trying to drive it into the ground for tax breaks?

The home field advantage

It's bad enough when your competition has 2 of the most popular syndicated hosts in talk radio....Boortz and Clark. But when both of them are from that town and have long histories in radio there, it makes it even tougher. Then to add insult to injury, didn't WGST allow both to slip away. I know Moceri brought Boortz over, but i'm not sure about Clark.

I wonder if the results would be the same if both stations were located in a neutral city like Denver or Pittsburgh?

Re: The home field advantage

As I mentioned before, Clark Howard was at the G-spot doing a weekend travel show - an irritating voice, but he knew that many people were cheap and wanted good travel information. No one thought he would be so popular at the time. It's another case of try it out and see if it works. Boortz has been on the air here since the 70's, but wasn't always on top. Times change, tastes change, and the only thing you can bet on is that there is no formula. Anyone who listens to an hour of a show and says they can predict it will be a hit in any particular market is surely a fool.

A lot of what you hear on GST is forced. It's management forcing talent to do a show the way management wants it done. One of the reasons Neal does so well is that he's been able to choose his own topics, take as much time as he wants with a topic and not have to hammer the audience with a silly slogan 20 gazillion times an hour! And, you need an excellent producer to do a great show.

I suspect that anyone who gets the 9-noon slot permanently at GST will get more comfortable with the show -- you're never comfortable as a fill-in. It's always a crap shoot trying to second guess the PD and what the audience wants as well.

Also, another thing to keep in mind is that WSB has a better signal than WGST. That plays into radio habits. And, it's been much more consistent than WGST. Look at WCNN and all the changes that station has made (the old "Ring Radio.) Boortz has parlayed his career from Ring Radio to GST to SB.

The bigger question here is that why does WGST do so poorly? Really! In most markets, the station with Limbaugh is the big dog. In most markets, the station with baseball is the big dog. Why not GST? Is it all because of the talent there? Management? Clear Channel talkers in other markets hold their own, but GST is way down in the ratings.

Man, at this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if GST goes to Spanish Sports!

Nah... never happen. ::)

This old thread is just a reminder that the train wreck had been coming for the last SEVEN years, and actually before that. This stupid decline took probably an extra decade, maybe two decades. It's been like watching someone die slowly. Vegetative state.

CC management should be held accountable but won't be. Shareholders won't care. Listeners won't care. Maybe only radio geeks will care.
