WSBA

I don't know if it's just me.....but WSBA's signal seems to be much improved. I've noticed marked improvement on my car radio in both day and night signals. From what I understand they had been doing tower work and operating at lower power. Has this been completed? Any thoughts?

What I have noticed over the past 4-6 months was a severe signal problem near the towers on Susquehanna Trail. The sound is garbled and difficult to listen to.

They came back to full power some months ago---maybe 3 months or so? Had been 1250 day/250 night non-D during work.

They seem to have more punch than they did BEFORE the tower work was done. I got them clearly at night in Hershey. The night signal seems better to the west as well. Anyone know what was done? Ground system improvements?

I'd doubt that---I know the engineer there, he's fairly obsessive about pattern tolerance. He also believes in being LOUD, and setting processing aggressively can make a big difference in "punch". Susquehanna was required to install 4 new towers as part of the sale to Cumulus; I would imagine that would have included ground system--otherwise why bother---but don't know for sure.

That's probably it. New ground system combined with loud processing. I've heard of some stations, which run lower power at night.....that actually have more agressive processing for their night signal. Don't know if that's the case here.

The replacement of the towers, actually the rebuilding of the entire transmitter site was planned at least a year before the break up of Pfaltzgraf was annnounced. Nothing at all to do with Cumulus.

At that time Susquehanna Real Estate decided to build the office strip which is now there.
So we had to move from the building where WSBA started in 1942.

As to the towers, they were all replaced. All new feed lines. The phasor moved to the new building.

Before the project was begun an examination of the ground radials showed no need of replacement. Also several points were measured and compared to the 1961 proof of performance with little change within ten miles.

However, at my insistance after finding the 1983 project had the only ground running between the towers and the transmitter building to be a 1/4" wire, we installed 4" copper strap from each tower to the transmitter building. Once on the air from the new building, with the new lines and grounding I noticed a considerable improvement in the signal out at a distance (Havre de Grace, Md in fact). Not much of a change with the new towers though.

At the time I chose to leave, now almost 2 1/2 years ago, we were beginning the work of combining 1440 onto the 910 tower 2. Problems getting it to work kept the station on NON D until sometime earlier this year.

What has been done since my departure I don't know.

As to the insinuatiuon in a previous post that I was inept, I can show you the monitor point measurements from my time there indicating the correct power and pattern.

Any insinuation about the engineering at WSBA was NOT meant towards you, but towards Cumulus. Sorry if you took it that way.
