WSBT-TV signal is lousy

What gives with WSBT-TV's analog signal?

I have a cottage in Union Pier, Michigan and for the last couple of months, I am getting South Bend's LP's better than Channel 22. Channel's 16, 28 and 34 great.

It's noticeable here in Elkhart too. Seems like I've had to tinker with the antennas on my non-cable TV upstairs to pick up the 22 signal a lot more, lately (although it's an old TV, so I've been blaming that rather than the signal). Downstairs TV is on cable, so nothing noticeable there.

Have there been any antenna changes recently for WSBT-TV? I know co-owned KYTV in Springfield, MO recently put its digital and analog signals on the same tower. That's been wreaking increadible havoc with KY-3's analog signal to where it's almost unwatchable in most parts of town.

WSBT has a permit for digital operation from an antenna about 300' lower on their tower than the analog antenna. They've also filed to install a new digital antenna atop the tower, roughly 25' *higher* than the existing analog antenna. A new analog antenna at the same height is also part of that plan. Along with the new analog antenna, they've applied to reduce analog power, from 4790kw to 2750. (to be honest I doubt you'd notice the difference)

My guess... is that they're working on the temporary digital antenna and are having to reduce analog power considerably further than 2750kw, to protect the tower workers from RF fields.

KYTV recently reduced the height of their analog antenna by about 35'. Probably to accomodate installation of their digital antenna above it. The station I work for (WSMV, Nashville) did the same thing when we installed our digital. Part of the work involved removing the analog antenna from the tower altogether, so we operated for awhile with a temporary analog antenna considerably lower on the tower. (and at reduced power, as the smaller temporary antenna had less power gain) I would venture an educated guess KYTV did pretty much the same thing.
