WSBX Count Down

The count down is on for the mighty 1020. The fateful day is near the end of the month. Will that stentorian signal once again emanate across the greater Ochlocknee metroplex?
 
A friend who lives in Georgia told me last week that he doesn't believe the tower is still standing.

I have not seen that for myself, so I can't confirm if that is accurate or not.

I don't believe 1020 will ever come back. It gets more attention on the boards than it does in real like.
 
Also WHGH-AM 840 is off the air for good too. All the Thomasville AM stations are going downhill but expect WPAX-AM 1240 still on the air in Thomasville.

Hey Alan did u hread any news about WHGH-AM 840 since they been off the air?
 
Is the 730 facility still on down there? Used to be WLOR (I think?) A "few" years ago.

Regarding the WSBX deal. That is sad, but a sign of the times. I recall seeing that place back a long time ago, probably in the late 80's maybe early 90s at the time it was a nice plant. They had the MW-10 transmitter, which at the time was not super old, although probably not new.
 
The station at 730 is still on the air, as WSTT. It has a gospel/paid preaching program mix. I believe it still operates as a 5 kw daytimer. I loved that station in its WLOR country days!

WSBX, the former WJEP, did have a nice facility. It was built around 1984, or thereabouts.

I think I remember reading that WHGH was late in filing their renewal. They are still listed as deleted by the FCC. Have not heard anything else, so I don't know if the owner is trying to bring it back or not.
 
Unless it's come down in the past few months, the WSBX tower is still standing...of course, it hasn't been lit in years...no other equipment left though. Curious...what is the countdown you are referring to?

WHGH has been off for a few weeks now...don't know the status...I hope Mr. Gross is trying to get his license issue sorted out.

WSTT is alive and kicking...and actually sounding much better than it has in 10 years.

If this were any other license in any similar situation, I would have to quote my grandmother: "'Tain't very likely." Part of me says, though, that this zombie isn't quite dead....
 
I guess they could rig up something using an old tube transmitter. When WWVA AM lost their three towers, they did the "close-line" with insulators to get back on air at reduced power. The old tube transmitters are pretty forgiving of impedance mis-matches.
 
If by fried, you mean...gutted and sold for scrap...then yes...at least that's what happened to the MW-10. I heard at one point he got a hold of a barely working solid-state (Omnitronix I think)...and even had someone out there to try and get it working, but...then they figured out the coax and ATU parts had also been scrapped.

They also briefly had a solid-state rental 1kw Nautel, but that's another story that won't get told on the board...haha.
 
Anybody down that way know if any FAA NOTAM's are in effect, concerning the tower lights, lack of tower lights, condition of the tower, or lack of a tower? Maybe call the Thomasville Airport, or Moody AFB.

I've got family in Lake Park, but that's about 45-50 miles away. Probably couldn't say for sure if WSBX is on the air or not.

I think Woody originally said lightning, together with a really bad ground system.
 
I live a few miles from the TX site. Not on air, hasn't been since I last turned off the MW-10 about 5 years ago.

I remember when WAVC in Warner Robins had no lights for months/years. They were right down the street from Robins AFB.
Problem solved itself, when the tower got so rusty it fell down. ::)

Please share your story, as that's all that really exists about Mr. Blood: story after story after story.
Wait, does this story actually detail that Steven Blood has actually....worked? Actually, held a job?
