WSCL off Air

Delmarva Public Radio’s classical non-com WSCL (89.5) says its antenna was “destroyed by lightning.” The Salisbury, MD station says there was “sharp lightning and hail” Monday night, and its main signal at 89.5 has been off since morning drive on Tuesday. They’re hoping to get a temporary antenna up by today, with a possible permanent antenna sometime next week. WSCL’s based at Salisbury University, from which Delmarva Public Radio operates a classical music-based service on WSCL and a talk-based news-and-information service on WSDL, Ocean City (90.7). They share some programming, such as the Sunday morning “2 Boomer Babes” talkshow.

This happen once before, more than 20 years ago. The antenna is located on a tower with WDPB, a southern Delaware repeater for WHYY in Philadelphia.

WSCL is back on the air at reduced power from a loaner 1 bay antenna mounted just below the lightning damaged antenna.

I had a chance to see the antenna yesterday, and you could see where the lightning struck, and once the center conductor was removed you could see the damage this strike made. The station is ordering an optimized replacement, and will probably be on reduced power for awhile. The station continues to be available through Delmarva Public Radio's website for online streaming as well as on smartphone apps like radio in tune.

How is the reception of WSCL on Delmarva now with the reduced power? I live in Wilmington and am able to hear WSCL all the time in stereo probably because I'm in a high rise Apt building but it is completely gone now. I was wondering how far from Seaford the signal is reaching.
