WSCP

I don't get to the area all that often but I just heard about WSCP being leased out to a religious organization. I guess this happened a couple weeks ago. There has been nothing on this board about it. I am starting to think I am missing something. Is there a new "hipper" board out there that I don't know about and am not invited to?
This should be major news. I am surprised no one has brought it up before.
My thoughts: It a shame. This just gives Clear Channel even a bigger opitunity to monopolize the market. I guess WSCP was just too small to make a dent and be profitable. It would seem like there must be a class "B" FM in the area that could take on B-104 (and their country format) and their huge ratings. It's, also, a shame that some good people are out on the street.
I am, also, surprised that the "Ed haters" haven't been filling up this board gloating over his failure at WSCP.
And finally, if one thing Syracuse and Upstate N. Y. doesn't need is another religious
station taking up band width.

I was thinking the same thing, but the sale of WSCP got buried unless it was JUST announced or something. I haven't seen it on the R&R transaction pages yet.

And be 24/7 satellite fed at that!

I think I saw something about on All Access. I beleive the station is just being
leased (maybe with an option to buy). It still belongs to Galaxy for the moment.

Re: WSCP update

There is something on All Access today - 3/7 about the sale of the Galaxy staions in Syracuse and Albany.

Scott Fybush had mentioned the WSCP sale in a recent issue of Northeast Radio Watch.
Some very good points were raised here. I agree that WSCP was too small a station to take on WBBS. The reason for this is simple. WSCP was never meant to be a major market station. When they signed on decades ago, their goal was to provide local radio service to Pulaski, Sandy Creek, and surrounding areas. So many times, in this era of corporate radio, a small town station is swallowed up, and the new owner tries to pass the station off as a major market signal when it really isn't. And as a result, a small community lost its only local radio voice. A question. Were they still running WSCP out of studios in Pulaski? Or was it relocated to be with the rest of the Galaxy cluster?
Anyway, the days of classic country on 101.7 are gone for good. The next question is, what will become of AM 1070? I heard that they were relaying TK99. Classic rock on AM! My guess is, that's temporary until they can figure out what to do with it. Most likely, it will end up with some bland no name talk format, or they may try to sell it or lease it out to another pay for pray outfit. Or maybe another simulcast of WTLA.
What would be great, is if someone in Pulaski or Oswego county could buy the station from Galaxy, and turn it back into a local radio voice for the area. I know, it's just not gonna happen. But we can dream, can't we?

It would be nice to see more local content on area radio stations. For the size of the area markets, there shouldn't be as much satellite and voice tracked programming...of course just my opinion.
Anyhow, there are too many AMs doing talk radio...it isn't original anymore. A simulcast of an FM is just an easy way out to keep the license and the frequency "warm". Hopefully someone could get creative.

Or they could just bring back the classic country format on AM. Ok, so it won't stand a chance agaisnt 104.7 in the ratings. But I suspecdt the format had a small but loyal following when it was on WSCP AM and FM.
In Buffalo, there is a small AM station that runs classic country (WXRL), and it has a very loyal following. In spite of the fact that there is a monster FM signal that does country there, and has been doing it for years.

I am not 100% sure, but I do believe WSCP was being run out of the Galaxy cluster in Armory Square. Makes sense, since it would allow them to run SCP's automation, traffic logs, music logs, etc. out of the same building as the other stations. I believe there were recently pictures either online, on TV or in the paper, and the studio looked way too "new" to be something I'd expect to see in a "standalone" station, let alone in Sandy Creek.

I wonder if they did many remotes. I'm sure that had to be a pain, considering the jocks were likely based in Syracuse, and would have at least a 35-minute drive to ANY remote they did. Same goes for sales people on their day-to-day business, unless they were still working out of a dedicated office up north.

Is there a Peter Hunn in the room? Hunn? Hunn? Anyone? Even if he was interested, the price is probably too high for an individual operator. Classic country may have a loyal following, but I doubt it would be enough to cover the salaries of a full air staff. Especially if it's AM only. It may work in a major market like Buffalo, but I wouldn't bet on it here. Granted, B104.7 and Froggy 97 are often criticized for not playing enough classic country, but being the only country stations in their markets, they get away with it. If there was enough demand for classic country 24/7, then WSCP would have already unseated, or at least put a major dent into, these stations.

I usually don't like to defend Galaxy, but you have to give them credit for giving WSCP a chance for as long as it did. Even though they moved the studios down to Syracuse, at least they gave the pre-existing format a fair chance to continue for awhile. If some major corporation had bought the station, they likely would have flipped the format or re-sold it back out to "pay for pray" radio within minutes after receiving the license themselves.

Re: WSCP info about station

from a very reliable source here is the WSCP scoop. Gary (5-10am) Dee (10a-noon) and Kevin(12-7p) were all still out of the Pulaski studios..all FYI excellent people who worked their butts off to try to get that station where it shouldve been...but enough about that, the 1070 am freq went to TK99 and the 2 fm's no longer belong to them (galaxy) its EMF out of california. I was told Galaxy never bothered putting the effort into trying to build it up even though granted going against BBS is no easy task if not impossible...

i'm not really sure why a 2 hour airshift in between a 5 and 7 hour shifts....if she did 2 hours why have Kevin on for 7 hours 6 days a week but that's how they did things i guess.....out of the Pulaski studios and tracked for the most part probably------i cant imagine them being live all day

Well let's not kid ourselves. the crap that WBBS plays isn't even country. 85% of it is pop. throw a cowboy hat on Faith Hill and all the sudden she's country ? please !

So in my opinion, we lost the only country station Syracuse had. country is officialy dead in the cuse.
