WSDS

R&R reports that WSDS in suburan Detroit has changed from classic country to Spanish. One of the great old AM country stations going way back that continued to program local country on AM.

Reminds me of what happened to WXGI in Richmond. A lost heritage.

I have no idea what Fox "news" is telling people, but as far as radio goes Spanish formats are more "sellable" than classic country (aimed at an older demo) and apparently this is the first 24 hour Spanish station in the Detroit market. If Detroit was a good market for Spanish programming someone would be putting it on FM, so I guess its a niche format there as classic country was.

I believe there is another clsssic country format outside Detroit on WCXI (once the call letters of an AM&FM country station in the city)- are they still classic country and do they reach most of the market?

Don't know how successful Spanish is either. In 1999 WRDR outside Atlantic City was sold and switched to Spanish after decades as a highly-rated adult standards/nostalgia format on FM. That lasted a couple years. They've since gone through contemporary country, smooth jazz, and now it's some sort of Hot AC, all in just six years. If it ain't broke, why do they have to fix it anyway?

(By the way, WXGI in Richmond switched to sports [ESPN, I think], not Spanish).

Hispanics

Hispanics are the largest growing minority group in the United States and I've heard that if the current growth of the hispanic population continues, in several decades there will be more Spanish speaking people in this country than English speaking ones.

As for Fox News' supposed claims that most spanish speaking people are here illegally, I won't address that claim (other than recognizing the source) but I'm reminded of something I've heard before...there's always been an immigration problem in this country; just ask any Indian.

As far as WRDR, the Spanish FM was targeting Philadelphia but the signal wasn't that good in the city, and for some reason Spanish radio hasn't done well in that market. Apparently (according to previous posts) the country format that replaced it for a time was never meant to last but was just a ploy for a time by the owners to try and take ratings from WPUR in Atlantic City.

I think the previous post was just comparing the loss of WSDS to that of WXGI, not saying they turned Spanish. The WXGI owners (Gee) recently bought another small Virginia classic country station that reaches parts of the Richmond market during the day to get back into the country format.

Another great smaller market independent classic country station WBZI in Zenia, Ohio. They have 2 simulcast partners in sw Ohio now, too, and their website says streaming will return soon!
