WSEN was SOLD! The new owners are Leather Stocking Radio and they own WCMR. Waiting for that apology!

Here it is. You were right and I was wrong. I apologize.

Here's a link to more of the story:

RadioFlow,

Is there any word if there will be any changes to the stations once Leatherstocking takes over?

If you missed it this AM the sale price was $2.1 million.
Indicative of what's to come when the Clear Channel, Cumulus, Citadel fire sales begin. $2.1 M for a Class B FM and 5 kW AM in Syracuse? Not a steal, but certainly very reasonable and serviceable. I'd take the AM brokered religious and ethnic, then use the funds to pay down the debt and hire a few more live bodies for the FM.

I wonder what the multiple was on this. $2.1 for the FM alone would be cheap. Let me get out my calculator:

$30/spot * 10 min./hr. * 12 hrs./day * 6 days/wk. * 52 wks./yr. = $1.12-million.

I would think that I'm SERIOUSLY underestimating cash flow here, huh? Even if the AMs don't break even, they can't be costing THAT much. Makes you wonder why Buckley sold.

At first, I was about to say your figures were more than conservative. Then it occured to me that Syracuse may be even harder hit than Utica-Rome, Buffalo or Binghamton. You'd think the cluster was taking more than $1 million a year off the table, but one never knows. Consider what Clear Channel sold its Utica-Rome cluster for... like they wanted to just get out of the market at any cost. Word is Buckley is facing challenges at WOR-AM New York, which may have the largest concentration of upper demos of any talk station in America. Could be Buckley spun off its Syracuse cluster to prop up NYC. Then again, maybe Buckley wants to get out of New York state and they're shopping WOR too. Time will tell.

I wonder how much more business there is than WVOA already does though.

I used to think "Give me those AM's and I'll find something that works". I think that ship has sailed, however.

Here's an idea. How many of you would bite on this? The purchase price was $2.1 million. If someone offered you $500k for both AM's, would you take it? Almost 1/4 of the purchase price. Yes, that would make WSEN-FM a stand-alone but one would argue that it already is.

I'd take that money and run.

To the average people

Dont these "Spinsters" sound like Radio is getting thrown under the bus? They sound like a bunch of cackling condors squawking over the last millimeter of meat left on a dead carcas in the road.

That 1390 signal makes one wonder. Strong pattern. Solid market penetration. Perhaps the new owner will combo it with WMCR-AM and carry high school sports and community service for Oneida and parts east of Syracuse. That would make 1390 one of the most powerful "community" stations in these parts. Here's a thought: Is there a college, educational or community group that might want to buy or lease an AM? Tough question, given the financial challenges facing the non-profit community these days. Typically, colleges and universities don't spend money from their endowments on frivilous commodities.

I doubt that you could get $500K for the AMs.

You may be right, but my bet is a non-comm/religious would pay that for them. I know of a group that has paid MORE for less signal than 1390 would offer.

It will be interesting to see how the new owner uses the AM's, and if there is any synergy at all with the Oneida stations.

I don't see that idea going anywhere. Plenty of AMs have been donated to colleges the last few years and many of the colleges came to regret it, between high electric bills, the regulatory headaches and lack of donor support for AMs. Plus, most colleges are tightening their belts like everyone else and its not like owning an AM really is a selling point for attracting students. In fact, many colleges are requiring their existing stations to be self-supporting financially, using the threat of selling them on the open market for leverage. And other non-profits have even less cash and less interest.

Does anyone know if Leatherstocking Media Group has a website? I have been trying to find one to see what kind of stations they have and if there is any streaming online.

The only ones they have are the two in Oneida and now Syracuse. It's a new company.

For what it's worth, WSEN is a B1 not a B. 25kW @ 91 meters.

Point made and taken. Again, regarding my intital post, WSEN-FM has a good signal and the price was very reasonable.
