WSEV AM 930 testing with 3 songs

WSEV AM 930, Sevierville TN has woken up from it's long winter's nap (silent from August to this week) and is testing. They've been playing 3 songs: "Knocking On Heaven's Door-Bob Dylan; "Mysterious Ways"-U2, and "Something"-The Beatles over and over again for the last couple of days. No IDs that I've heard. Should be easy to snag through the clutter. This was the former Smoky Mountain Radio, home of Milton Crabapple.

Thanks for the heads-up. I don't see WSEV-AM in Radio-Locator, so I'm wondering what power/pattern they're using. I presume they're on for purposes of not having to surrender their licence.

930 here around the far northwestern suburbs of Chicago at night is dominated by semi-local Catholic Radio (the former WAUR), which has a fair-good signal at my home QTH. It's fairly easy to null, however, so I'll see if I can give it a shot.

They shouldn't be in danger of having to surrender the license just yet. They got the silent STA in August. The license was purchased by Bristol Broadcasting (which owns WLNQ and WNPC in the immediate area) and my assumption is they are testing for a return to the air, format unknown. They have a CP to move a translator that has existed for years to 104.1, which will be on the AM 930 tower. Still playing the 3 songs as of this afternoon.

Tried for this one a few nights ago here in central Ohio and it didn't make it through the mush, at least not that I heard.
Maybe this colder weather moving in will help. I'll check again tonight.

I tried here in Northern Illinois, but heard no trace of it. I'll try again this weekend.

I'd expect the 930 from the Aurora area (Catholic Radio) would be less of a pest where you are than it is for me at my QTH. I'm actually house-sitting/baby-sitting at my son's house, about 16 miles northeast of home this weekend, so it might be a little easier for me from here. I'll take another stab at it this weekend, also.

If they are operating properly, they are 5kW non directional day and 150 watts at night. FCC sunrise should be 7am/sunset 8:15pm.

I tried again last night (Saturday) around 10:30pm CDT. Again from the location where the semi-local on 930 is slightly less of a pest than it is at my home. Still not even a whiff of it. I'll be back at home tonight, and I'll try to give it one last shot. 5kw ND should be enough to make the hop at night. 150 watts probably not. At least for any of my radios barefoot.

Tried again for what will probably be the last time last night (Sunday 4/3). I decided to use the Superadio II. The result was with WKBM (Catholic Radio) nulled, I was able to hear several signals. None of which were identifiable, and nothing that sounded like music. Later, I tried the SRF-37 walkman. Nowhere near as sensitive as the Supe, but much better at nulling signals such as WKBM's, which is still reasonably potent around here. It powers up from 2.5kw to 4.2kw. The result was with WKBM's signal all but missing, I did briefly hear music. But nothing identifiable and certainly nothing that sounded even remotely like the three songs previously mentioned as being played by WSEV.

So....."mission not accomplished".

Oh well, propagation is a picky thing. Not sure what the point of playing those 3 songs 24/7 is.

I'm guessing that they're running night power at night. Like they're supposed to. How novel!

As I posted earlier, 5kw ND should be enough to make the hop to the Chicago area more often than not. Take it to 150 watts, and it might not be enough to cut through WKBM and the other pests on the channel.
