WSHE back to South Florida, can we Zeta back here?

WORJ Zeta 7 could have continued to be Orlando's "Rock Station" had it adjusted to the changing demos over the years. The fact that WJRR and WHTQ have been continuously programming rock, in one form or another, for the past 17 and 23-years respectively proves there is a demand for the format. My understanding the reason WORJ became WJYO "Joy 108" in 1980 is because the former GM felt soft adult contemporary would produce better ratings and ad revenues at that time, and Joy 108 was a success for over ten years before becoming WMGF in 1990.
 
This biz can be cyclical. A truly great rock station that can stand the test of time would be nice to see. Is WJRR that station?
 
WJRR has certainly managed to stay in the rock game for the past 17-years. Part of the reason is because WJRR has "adjusted" with the changing market demands over the course of its existence. I'm sure as long as WJRR continues to meet its target demo's market demand, WJRR will continue to succeed for another 17-years.
 
We wish wSHE was back in South Florida. It's a fansite. It's not real. 105.5 FM is WOLL - KOOL 105.5 and has been for years in the West Palm market.

WOLL is licensed to Hobe Sound, isn't it? It does indeed, have an impressive 50kw signal over Palm Beach.

Regarding WSHE, as you may already be aware, those call letters were moved from Fort Lauderdale to the former WDIZ (now WRUM) 100.3 Orlando in 1996 when Bud Paxson acquired both stations. At the time Paxson was coined "Mr. Florida Radio" because Paxson Communications owned more Florida radio stations than any other group. Interestingly, Paxson sold his Florida radio holdings a year later to Clear Channel Communciations for $693,000,000. The WSHE call letters are now assigned to gospel formatted AM 1270 Columbus, Georgia, owned by Clear Channel's Aloha Station Trust, LLC.
 
Yes, KOOL is licensed to Hobe Sound. They have a weak signal north of Fort Pierce and south of Delray Beach, but, their majority listeners, advertisers, and promotions are done primarily through West Palm. Actually, they are not part of the Fort Pierce market as KOOL shares offices with Wild 955, Gater 98.7, etc...and not the Fort Pierce outlet of Oldies 103.7 and Wave 92.7.
 
So, the legendary WSHE calls belong to some podunk AM station in Georgia? Seriously? At least KSHE is around.
 
Yes, the WSHE call letters are "parked" on the Columbus AM. The station is for sale as part of the Aloha Station Trust; However, I'm sure the call letters are not a part of any sale and will be moved to another station once the current WSHE(AM) is sold. WSHE left 100.3 Orlando in 2004.

If you will recall, awhile back the WINZ call letters were moved to a Clear Channel AM station in Augusta, Georgia, WYNF-AM 1340 (WYNF is also parked) and parked there for a short period when WINZ Miami briefly became WRFX in 2002. The WINZ call letters returned to AM 940 in 2004.

If only Clear channel would worry less about stuff like this and more about putting good programming on the air....
 
The call letters have certain "good will" value, and for this reason, the call letters are saved, reserved or "parked" outside the original market to protect an investment and to prevent another licensee from applying for and returning the calls to the original market in an effort to use the recognizable call letter name to compete against the current licensee or call letter holder.
 
Call letters can be reserved when a station requests changing to a set of new call letters at a pre-determined post date, usually no more than 90-days in advance. The U. S. Coast Guard may also reserve call letters for various Coast Guard vessels (The U.S. Coast Guard uses the same radio call letter format as radio and television stations). Sometimes the FCC will make certain call letters, although unassigned, unavailable and a special request or waiver is required before the FCC will release said call letters. However, the most commen way to preserve call letters is to do what Clear Channel (and others) is doing by parking specified call letters on another station, preventing another licensee from applying for said specified call letters.
 
What if someone wanted WNBC on their new AM ???

Vadar, I grew up near St. Louis. If KSHE ever flips or changes calls I'm done with radio.

They'd have to persuade GE...er, Comcast...to change the callsign on channel 4 in New York from WNBC back to WNBC-TV, at which point an AM station could have the WNBC calls...with the permission of (and presumably a hefty payment to) NBC.
 
Thanks for starting this thread. It reminded me of WPLA once CC blew up Planet Radio for WJGH to compete with WJGL (Cox) in Jax ???(still don't understand it, but that's for another thread). Apparently CC 'parked' those on another AM in 'Podunk', GA. I was hoping maybe CBS would pick them up and bring them back to the Tampa Bay area to use on the new Play 98.7, but guess now that won't be happening.
 
Tragic that great calls just end up in podunk USA on AM stations.... :(
