WSIX-FM tower location

Romer asked the question "where was the original WSIX-FM transmitter?"

It seems I remember (information from others, Cap or Jim Duke) the original WSIX-FM tower location was on the same hill in Brentwood where it is now except on an old Truscon self-supporting tower. That tower was still up there until a few years ago and I don't know if it still there or not. The FM went off the air in the 50's as they needed the space for the TV transmitter, but returned in 1962. Seems like the original frequency was one or two channels down from where it is now. The west end of the building up there is the original structure as is the old rock house that the resident engineer occupied was seperated from the original structure to the east(Chuck Dillard, rip). TV station studio was also up there until 1962 when they built the facilities at 441 Murfreesboro Road. You could see the old control rooms until they used that space for the new DTV transmitter room. As you come up the hill the building on the right was an old THP two-way radio dispatch center, WSM also had a tower up there at one time to develop and test TV STL systems they used to transport NBC from Louisville. As a side note, that old studio area was stacked floor to ceiling with just about every piece of equipment they ever owned, old cameras, film chains, video tape and switchers just to name a few.

Best,

One hill over (west) I have relatives on the one you speak of. You should hear the stories of how much they paid for house and land in 1964.

Watt is correct, as usual. The original WSIX frequency was 97.5. I found the test data for the orginal antenna ( on GE letterhead, of course) in one of the file cabinets in the TX room. Dated sometime in 1948, I think.

While this is not historical info, does anyone know if the old tower will be dismantled? And how far apart are the two towers? I have a friend who lives a few thousand feet away and nearly under them, and when we're sitting on his back porch, they are pretty impressive to look at, especially at night. I know, I need to get a life. Still, it's just cool to see.

I might not be the one best to reply but my impression from talking to Gene Parker after it went up a few years ago was both will remain up there.

Just looking at the FCC DB, it would appear channel 8 intends to use their existing antenna (on the old tower) when they move their digital back to channel 8 next February. Channel 2 will stick with their current channel 27 digital antenna. (on the new tower) It looks like WSIX moved from the old tower to the new one not too long ago and presumably intends to stay there. (but there's some discrepancy in the FM coordinates, they don't match *either* tower perfectly...)
