WSJ: "CONAN" FALLS FLAT IN SEASON ONE

Conan was all ready hitting a downslide when he was competing against Craig Ferguson (and rightfully so I may add).

I wish no ill will toward Conan and I think he got screwed by NBC and Leno but his show is simply not appointment television. Frankly, none of the lot are. The only exception is Ferguson who can take the cheapest budget in the smallest studio and "create" something unlike any other late night program.

Sewing silk from a sow's ear comes to mind.

Ferguson is spinning gold with little effort.

Perhaps Lopez' ouster could be construed as a "warning show" for Conan.

The audience in question finds The Daily Show quite easily with no local news lead in.

The Daily Show is of a different format though. It is more of a parody. And a following that
makes it appointment television. Conan is basically doing the same show as Jay Leno and Letterman.
You might watch it if it comes on after the late local sports, but are you gonna flip around the dial
looking for it?

I understand they're different formats, but the audience is going to whichever show they want to see, wherever it is. They're not welded to the channel that showed the late local news...if that audience is even watching it in meaningful numbers (an entirely different issue). If you're a hard-core Team Coco person, that may be every bit the appointment show that the Daily Show is for Stewart's big fans. (And then you have the surfing crowd, who flips between them, and whichever other shows) for whatever makes them chuckle at that time.

From what I'm reading, no one is mentioning his online ratings, which from what I heard is huge. It beats out Steward and Colbert. That's what I've heard through the grapevine.

I've heard the same, TBS says its around a million views but were not specific on the details. A million views a day...week...month...year? Even if it was a million views a day that would make up to around two million viewers total which is what The Daily Show gets in TV viewers. Plus, online ads go for a dime a dozen. There's no way TBS makes money off their online content.
