WSJS SOLD!?!

Word is an inside memo has informed employees of WSJS that CBS has sold the station, along with nine other markets. No word on who the buyer is!

All Access says CBS has identified ten markets to be sold. They are AUSTIN, BUFFALO, CINCINNATI, COLUMBUS, FRESNO, GREENSBORO-WINSTON SALEM, KANSAS CITY, MEMPHIS, ROCHESTER, and SAN ANTONIO. Release sounds as if they are entertaining offers for those markets, and no actual sales have been completed.

So the question now is: what does this mean for not only WSJS/WSML, but for WMFR as well? I mean, let's face it... none of these stations have been doing too hot lately. Sure WSJS is back up to a 4.1 after a whole point dip in Spring, but the station still doesn't focus on the market as a whole very well. And WMFR, while I love the fact that High Point has a station all to itself in this day and age, needs to do more than just a local morning show and news simulcasts from WSJS at the top of the hour to remain relevent. Will the new owners fix these problems?

The best possible solution for WSJS/WSML and WMFR are for them to be picked up by Entercom. Other than E-com I do not know who would want them. To its credit...WSJS makes a mint, but its and aging demo.

If Curtis Media wants a piece of the Greensboro market, and the leadership of the news/talk race there, they should look into purchasing these stations. They DO have a record of keeping older AM's profitable and active in their communities. Plus, WSJS/WSML would make a good sister combinaiton to their WZTK in Burlington.Later,Matt SmithWGSR-TV, Reidsville, NC

Look for someone like Davidson Media to try and buy them and then try to spin WMFR to someone, anyone that will buy them. Entercom is maxed out and doesn't have interest in getting these, and they may be maxed out with four FMs and two AMs (WPET and WEAL). Plus, there's a real possibility that Clear Channel will put FM Talk on their move-in which should go on the air in a couple of months. Then it's only a matter of time before they take Rush and perhaps Hannity for WSJS/WSML. WSJS/WSML have always been a very profitable mini-cluster which makes dumping the stations difficult.

WSJS/WSML does about 3.5-million a year. It's usually third in local billing in the market! Out performs most of the FMs. It can be a cash cow from one of the existing groups.

If that’s the case, Spanish won’t be a good fit. I know that the two am’s (Isassi+Saucedo) combined sales won’t approach this figure. ;)
