WSJS Sold????

YOU'RE A GENIUS!!! I think you've got it! Now, if anyone has a brain, that's exactly what they'll do! Just brilliant... I had not thought about the other AM's in the equation, but it makes huge sense! Now if they'll just keep the owner of Hits and his toadie out of management it could be a huge success.

Hitz is NOT changing. Gig is not giving up his stations that easy!

While Matt's idea is a good one, don't look for Gig Hilton to give up Hits and LXN as an owner. Now, and LMA might be an idea that could work! Those things still happen, and would allow Hilton to retain ownership and the perks that go with it.

The other flaw with Matt's idea is that it would require the persons in charge to think. So far, they haven't demonstrated much ability in that area.

Comments, anyone...is it possible?...would it work?

It does not solve the signal problem in Greensboro.

The market's largest city is on the edge of both the WSJS and WSML signals. The last time I was there, I had trouble getting a static-free signal from either 600 or 1200 near anything remotely approaching a power line. And of course, Lexington-based WLXN does nothing for that problem, either.

WZTK solves the problem. :) It also has the bonus of putting the station on FM for at least a large chunk of its market (Greensboro and east, basically), and FM is going to eventually be the wave of the future even for regular news-oriented talk stations. At least that's my feeling, at any rate.

The other way to solve the problem is to pry the market's only AM powerhouse, WTRU/830, out of Mr. Epperson's hands, but I have a feeling Mr. Curtis (or even Clear Channel) doesn't have enough money for that one...

Esta es la noticia. No es Univision para el Triad. Es muy calor en la playa.

I flunked Spanish in high school, but I bet it'll make a great stunt format...

Ah-ha! GHattaway! I think you've hit ze nail on ze head! They will stunt with the Hispanic, then switch to ze Oldies. Notice how hard Bob is trying to throw us in the Hispanic direction? I ain't buyin' it! It's going to be OLDIES!!!!!!!!!

Here's two questions that I think will seperate the PD's from the Board Op's....

1) Oldies. If there were still a pulse for that format, would the Wall Street broadcasters have booted it? While Oldies in it's modern day incarnation may have been aging out (as it's listeners were dying off) I have to wonder why the Curtis' or Gig would want to invest in that format? The obvious answer is "it's better that what they've got", but do you think Oldies (as we know it) is really a viable format.

2) AM's. While I appreciate the "local" factor of AM's, I believe the audience that get's their local news and information from an AM is aging out. Yes AM's do have some younger numbers now and yes there are a number of very strong AMs around the country (both rating and cash flow), so allow me to frame the question like this..

Where do you see AM's 5-10-20 years from now. Will they even be a blip on the radar? With that in mind, is it really a sound long term decision to purchase AM's (big or small) today?

Yes, if only for the current performance and the ability to own the news/talk/info branding in the market for future use. On FM or wherever that lands in the future...

Oldies might not be a "viable" format for the Big Broadcast Corps, like Clear Channel and Entercom, but it would bring in some "nice" revenue for a local broadcast owner. One man's trash is another man's treasure!

One man's trash .. another's treasure. Which would you rather have - an also ran news-talk station that likely has problems billing enough to make the payroll - or an oldies format that could generate twice your current ratings and maybe three times your current billing! It's a no-brainer!

The smart move would be to upgrade WSML. You'd have to make a deal with CC, but, SML could go 50KW day and 10KW night. Both would be directional, and it might now be worth it - but I suspect it could greatly improve the signal over Greensboro.

Question is, if you simulcast ZTK and SJS, what the hell do you do with WSML?

Xtalker: What is the history on 1200? Didn't that station used to be a 250 watt daytime directional on 1190? Did CC engineer the upgrade on 1200? Have you seen engineering work for a potential power increase? If so, what does the night contour (at 10 kw) look like? Also, do you know if anyone has ever explored paying Truth to swap facilities - 600/1200 for 830 ?

erandboy, I am not an engineer, and have not seen the technical materials on WSML's possible upgrade. I do know it exists and at one time, when CC owned it, it seemed like a good possibility. I know the night pattern would be a rather critical one protecting something in the Boone area as well as WOAI.

Once CC spun off WSJS/WSML/WMFR to CBS, the conversation died - for obvious reasons.

WSML may have at one time been on 1190, back in the Smiles days, but I am not certain. If you want to know the full history, call Larry Ingold in the Graham office of CBS. He's been there a long time and knows much of the station's history.

As for smedge2006's comment about buying an AM, you might be well served by checking into the billing of the AM stations mentioned in this thread. You will find WSJS/WSML and WTRU quite profitable.

Don't look for Stu Epperson to give up 830 anytime soon.

If I recall correctly, WSML was on 1190 up into the 80s. The 10day/1 night upgrade was done when Ted Gray owned the place. The facility has changed very little, if at all, under CC and CBS ownership.

As for 50/10....times have changed. 1200 Blowing Rock is on now...so 50 would be a tough build these days. Probably the best that can be done, would be to let the night pattern out somewhat in the west...but not enough to give GSO coverage.

Originally, CC wanted 830, that was sold out from under them to Hearst Argile. 2nd choice for CC back in the day was 920 to pair with WSJS...that didnt work out, so CC ended up with the 1200 facility.

WSML transmitter is fairly modern. CBS installed a bigass generator there about 18-months ago! Downtown Graham studio is a joke - but not much comes from there anyway. Last time I looked, it still had the shag carpet!
