WSJS weekend Oldies

Has anyone else noticed that WSJS is now playing Oldies on weekends instead of running re-broadcast of Dave Ramsey and Others? Just played Classics 4, Chicago & Simon & Garfunkel.

Wes

I noticed it 2 weekends ago. Sounds okay, just needs a little reverb and echo! :D

Another station continuing to cater to the audience of everyone 65+ & UP

What are these stations thinking????? Another AM oldies? WSJS's weekend programming has always had trouble. They used to do local news on Saturday mornings which was kinda refreshing, they don't do that anymore. They have their local pay for play shows which is nice to at least have something local.

Talk radio programming needs such a makeover. Stations like WSJS who were the "We have Rush" station just get completely lost once Clear Channel pulls the carpet underneath them

The whole democrat bad, republican good format is so tired and overplayed. There's got to be some way stations can have interesting, local shows and mix that in with news.

Wait a minute, there is a way, PAY PEOPLE TO DO IT! Those days are long gone....

I don't know if there are any PPM numbers to back this up (because there probably aren't any stations doing it) but I like the idea of mixing music in with the talk shows. Not really into smooth jazz like WZTK does it, though, more like 850 The Buzz did when they first switched over in the late 90s....

I agree that the music is definitely better than running stupid "Best ofs" or "Replays" of weekday shows.

WSJS also used to randomly simulcast Sporting News Radio which made ZERO sense at all....I think a lot of talk stations find themselves in a tough spot on the weekends, a majority of them carry sports and that fills time on the weekend. They don't/can't pay anyone to come in and do weekend programming and the weekend audience is different from the weekday audience to begin with.

I actually think WZTK's smooth jazz works. It's different and I have to admit a personal bias, I do enjoy jazz. It's something unique they can hang their hat on

I think when you start running oldies you are really alienating your audience to the elderly. NOBODY under the age of 40 wants to listen to any music on AM. I realize back in the day AM Radio meant something but now, it's just crummy audio to people who weren't alive for the golden age of AM Radio. Not to mention the beaten to death playlists.

IF there's one station that needs a makeover, it's WSJS. Running oldies on the weekend isn't the answer.

And you like WZTK?

I'll admit some of that music resembles jazz to some extent.

As for WSJS, I remember them doing standards--not oldies--on weekends.

Smooth Jazz? Whatever you want to call it, Jeez...You're really pulling hairs, I didn't know Coltrane was on these message boards ::)

I haven't heard the WSJS oldies, I saw someone else posting about that, regardless playing "Old timer" music on the AM Band is a long path to nowhere.

Bottom line - $$$! If it doesn't make money, they won't do it. Wouldn't surprise me to see some stations start signing off on the weekends! About the only thing cheaper than automating music.

Fifteen years or so ago, WSJS had a great weekend line up that also made money. Sure, there were some "pay for play" folks, but for the most part, they were informative and not nearly as self serving as those around today. There were also shows that were popular with advertisers - what a novel idea - like the Yard Sale, Computer Talk (in the Steve and Stephen and the Deb and Gary eras). David Dalrymple's handyman show was an awesome advertiser attraction. There were even several hours of live/local call-in programming on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

While I enjoy some of the music they are playing, the presentation is bland and unimaginative.

Damn Mike, I didn't know the Swap Shop and Computer stuff was gone!! I lked that too.. I am in Florida again and didn't know! Thanx BIGAPE!

WSJS should make an offer for W244CD, move it to 96.5 and upgrade it to .25 kW at the biggest stick available near Kernersville. It's a challenge finding a big stick near PTI, but is possible on the Forsyth side. WTRU already has an FM translator at 97.7 on a short stick in Washington Park near Market Place Mall and contrary to popular belief, you don't have to use an OTA feed.

Why all of these comments over WSJS doing oldies on the weekend. The Curtis company is cheaper than Clear Channel so you can assure yourself they are not going to invest in talent for the weekend. They do Oldies in Raleigh so most likely will simulcast it! I listened for a short time and honestly WLXN has a much better format with the Kool Gold!

Clear Channel isn't so much cheap is just they're erratic with how they operate stations. They have union based wages but they hire/fire like it's a bodily function based on the quarter by quarter projections. Hence the awfulness of Corporate radio.

Why does ANYONE listen to music on the radio anymore? Especially on the AM...

WSJS is probably preparing for some sort of switch towards something. The formula they have right now, other than their morning show, is disastrous. They really were "The Rush Station"....Dave Ramsey pays to be there. Dennis Miller doesn't work in the South. ZTK has Savage & more local programming....WSJS is barely clocking in with a 1.0 and the whole "Traid Sports Network" seems to have been a colossal dud so far, maybe they'll ad the 600 signal to that group of stations and add some sort of Triad Based show.

One can only hope.
