So far, they are playing a syndicated network feed. It's still "smooth jazz". Rumor has it that Kathy Curtis isstill there. I guess we will find out in the morning.

They will replace Marvelous Marvin. Rico Blanco was on today, but anything is possible.

If WRBQ is going to remain personality intensive. why Marv?

1) Paid too much?
2) Too old school? Somebody once compared him to Dan Ingram
3) Format change?
4) longer shifts?

This is just weird

Maybe Cox will give him 10-3 on the Eagle--------and Tampa gets 10 inches of snow

It has to be #1. Everything comes down to money in the radio biz these days.

#2? I don't think his style would be a problem. Yes he used to remind me of Dan Ingram, but Marvin has really gone more and more low-key lately. Instead of Cox hiring him for the Eagle, I think he would be better suited for the Dove! At least at WDUV he could still play Elvis! ;D

Wow, if they let everyone go...what a shame! I worked with many of those staffers back when the station went on the air...Al Santana...top shelf...Tom Sanchez...great guy...and there are a few others, whose names don't immediately come to mind...hope they land on their feet...

That is brilliant. I know the Dove had a guy in PM drive time a few years ago. They also seem to slipping in the 12+. Why not put Marv on from 3 to 7 and voice track somebody from the Point in middays. You could call it "The listen not at work station" and "voted number one at the shuffle board court." Seriously, I always like Marv's style. Especially when he said" Up and down the Gulf beaches". Took me back to the summer of 62 and WMID in Atlantic City. ( even though that wasn't the Gulf, the concept was similiar)

I have streamed them for years, and I will miss Alicia Kaye in particular, she was a pro with a great voice. Why the hell is anyone going to listen to Dave Koz when they could listen to her? BA will ruin WSJT like they have ruined every other SJ station they have touched. They will flip in 6 months because no one will listen to them.

Live and local is the only thing that will save terrestrial radio; too bad the suits suffer from cranial-rectal inversion.

Did you get that "medical term" from Mayo Clinic?
Funny.

I can only speculate that WSJT really isn't making a lot of money. Yes the ratings are good, but the listener base is made up mainly from the adult "minority" population, which is unfortunately not seen as having a lot of buying power, at least in this area. Flipping on the satellite seems to be a "let's throw s**t on the wall and see what sticks" way of thinking. As soon as the station completely falls apart, I'm sure they will find another format (or just sell the station since CBS doesn't seem to be that interested in radio anymore anyway.)

It's a shame to lose these great heritage Bay Area personalities. Alicia Kaye was already mentioned. Al Santana is an amazing personality. And how long has George Nix been on the Tampa Bay airwaves?! Maybe there are spots for them at WLOQ in Orlando. What are they up to these days?

Didn't both stations just have week-ends at Coachman Park? I guess WSJT will have to terminate these things, I would agree that WSJT will tank . This would be a great oportunity for COX to take one of its tremendous properties to Urban AC as a real void will exist. You can always have jazz Sundays. Maybe SJT will go XMAS in Nov and flip to Urban AC in Jan. I guess allowing the DOVE morning crew to trash WSJT has paid off.

Smooth Jazz is rapidly nearing extinction as a format as the PPM approaches. I'm not sure why, maybe that multiple listeners in an office environment won't be counted the way they currently are with diaries? If someone knows more on that subject please share....

I can actually sing with the instrumental station jingles, since I listen to Smooth Jazz 94.1 all the way here in Orlando.

Did CBS sell this station or something? It's a good station. I also like their "Evolution Of Cool" & their "Nu Soul". Didn't I see a post on CBS Radio for a PT Talent for WSJT?

Agreed. Now that Broadcast Architecture Dilapidation is going to operate WSJT, I give it till February.

WSJT made plenty of money and had many high-end clients. The demos have always been steady. The problem was, several on air folks actually made money and had been with the company for years. Automation or a satellite feed is much cheaper.

I've never been a big fan of the music, I can take it for about a 1/2 hour about once a week. But, I loved the local personalities. Alicia, Al, and George were true professionals, know the market, and brought something different to the rathing boring saxaphone sound. The station had a classy sound. Remember, the long-time PD was also let go....another cost cutting move.

If the new GM thought the ratings weren't good, wait until he gets the next couple of books. My guess is they tank. I'd think the CBS "Fresh" might be under consideration, although it sounds just like the "New" Magic just up the dial.

Another dark day in Tampa Bay radio my friends.

I guess Magic is doing OK, but it is not live and local from 7PM to 5AM. I don't know if middays is VT'ed or not. If MIX flips away from AC, that would give CBS an opportunity for an AC format. I thought CBS had the most class of CC,CBS, and COX. I will never say that again.

The economics of WSJT's demise isn't too hard to figure out. The national economy is in the toilet, sales are probably so bad that salespeople might actually lose their jobs (incredible as it may seem), WSJT had a small collection of well-paid veterans-- you do the math. The radio conglomerates (some more than others) are bleeding money, and will continue to do so until the economy improves and advertisers start spending money again. That could be a few years....

I agree about the music: WSJT played mostly elevator-type "fus-zak", only good in small doses for limited periods of time. No real "Jazz" happening on that station. But the personalities were warm and local and real: Alicia, Al, George, Kathy, Tom, Chris, are all acquaintences and former colleagues. I hope they all land on their feet (there IS life after radio!).

Another sad day for the medium...

Agreed that I will not being saying CBS radio is heads and shoulders over CC, Cox, Salem, etc any longer.

I was wondering if they are even being voice tracked during the day, since Marie/Maria (94.1)something or another said
"Good afternoon!" at 8 minutes past 1000 this morning. Maybe she is voice tracking from Bermuda or maybe she is live and local and just exhausted trying to keep her job and doing 5 things at once. Isn't multi-tasking wonderful? :)

The PPM tends to shine a light on stations that - in the diary - have extremely low turnover. Why? Because much of that time-spent-listening recorded in the diary is due to listeners who are ardent fans of the station and write down that they are listening, whether they are or not. This diary-keeper behavior has been suspected for decades and has been capitalized on by formats as varied as classical, various ethnic formats, "free-form" progressive rock, and - of course - jazz. The PPM just verifies that what we thought was happening in the diary, really is.
