WSJW

how long can 92.7 stay with smooth jazz? seems the ratings are poor and the format is slipping or being eliminated in many cities. 92.7 should consider some type of rock format again.

why the hatred of the format? i'm not a fan of it either but does the area need another rock format? pretty much everything else is covered. sjw fills a nice little niche. and the ratings arent as bad as you make them out to be. remember we're dealing with a 700 watt signal here i think. no other format would do better and smooth jazz is super cheap to run. i actually think hall is satisfied with sjw's performance and the station won't be going anywhere anytime soon. just my 2 cents

Let's see, we have multiple AC/CHR stations in various flavors, multiple country stations in various flavors, multiple rock stations in various flavors. In your expert opinion, what format would fit, get decent ratings, and be sellable on a 6 KW Class A station sitting in the middle of multiple 50 KW Class B stations? No humming/buzzing senseless answer formats. Say what real, sellable format they should be!

well said vetguy. something else i think people forget is take a listen to a lot of sjw's commercials. they are from sister station the rose 101.3 indicating to me they are selling 92.7 as part of package deals with the rose. buy these spots on WROZ and for an extra ___ amount of money, we'll throw in sjw as well with their easy smooth jazz. again, i think hall is more than happy with sjw.

I like smooth jazz and I agree with the previous posts...what other format do you want to put on that would even be competitive?? No more COuntry or AC....maybe a true CHR like 98YCR used to be?? If you can't come up with anything, than stick with smooth jazz....Paul Scott is doing a hell of a job with that signal....

News-talk on FM is the latest rage. It just took 20 years to figure out that anything that works on AM will kick booty on FM.

Hall certainly has the money to do a top-notch news-talk format on WSJW, but they've historically not been the most energetic outfit. It would require some work. Right now, WSJW doesn't.

i think paul scott is taking that stick to the max. what else can you do...i would like to see an adult standards but those people are almost in the grave or beautiful/ac and no one does that anymore. i think smooth jazz is a good staple and i wish paul the best in keeping the format alive and well as it is.

i don't know paul scott personally or have any affiliations with wsjw or hall, but i think scott and hall have done an amazing job taking a limited signal station and turning it into a station that sounds as good as any top 10 market station, with a format that fills a nice niche in central PA. news/talk is possible, but it'd take too much effort and money for probably the same amount of ratings. leave well enough alone.

What I would like to see (and I know this is off topic) is an FM sports station that does ESPN radio and some local stuff....only place to pick up sports is WOYK and I hate AM radio in the mornings....I used ot have XM, but am waiting for the merger thing to come through before I renew...

I know AM is usually the bastion for sports talk, but an FM with a decent signal I think would do well...

A thousand cycle tone can get the same amount of ratings.

Y'all have to be pulling our leg, aren't you? My guess is that you're with Cumulus or WYCR or GTY and want to encourage Hall to keep the station in this non-competitive format--just to keep them out of your way.

If you're into niche music, buy an iPod. Radio is a mass-communication medium. There's nothing wrong with SJW's signal in the York market--it could be a player, if Hall made any effort at all.

I began this thread and I think I now see WSJW is flling a format niche in central pa. I just am not a fan of the smooth jazz format and still doubt its long term survival. I'll flip on smooth jazz now and take a nap---- and miss all the spots while I doze off!

I'v dug Smooth Jazz 92.7 since February or March 2004. I think it's been the best format on 92.7 since these...

*Solid Rock 92.7 Starview (Active Rock, 1993-1996)
*92 Rock (CHR/AOR, 1983-1984)
*Starview 92 (Progressive Rock, 1972-circa 1978)

Not a knock, but I get enraged when I see posts saying how "a station sucks because it has no ratings, so flip it to (insert format here)". It's 2007 (almost 2008) and revenue, not ratings, determines sucess. If WSJW wasn't billing, the format would have been blown up by now. Trust me, Hall knows what they're doing.

Believe it or not, some of us out here like Smooth Jazz. You have your stations. Can't the rest of us have one little station that we enjoy? JohnnyuinHanover,Pa.

i drove through near harrisburg the other day and was in a diner that had WSJW playing loud. i mentioned the station choice to the waitress. she said the customers have been complimenting the station since they switched the tuner from mix 106.7.
