WSKO just an embarrassment

I tuned in to the Score this morning (Saturday) and there was a real estate show on. A local show. At 9:30am. I understand the need to make money and maybe even broker time but come on... where is the sports on the sports radio station?

I'm willing to bet it's the same Remax show WPRO has on Sundays. Maybe the agreement was to run it on both stations. Or they could be looking to expand their audience, in which case stay tuned for Amazing Women On Steroids.

And that would explain why Deb Regerio sounds like Barney! :)

Its paid programing, listen early enough, all the stations of the cluster have that.

Clear Channel has something similar too.

And sports stations don't know the meaning of embarrassment.

The signal is the embarassment. Both stations have barely make it into freakin Johnston! At full power on a good car radio, 790 has moderate static, and the 99.7 signal sounds like crap in the east end of Johnston, along Atwood Ave. between Hartford Ave. and Plainfield Pike, along Plainfield Pike from Atwood Ave. into Providence, and along Hartford Ave. from 295 into Providence. Also, at full power 630 WPRO has the same signal problem in the same areas.

they will be playing music this Fall. Count on it. The score is over. Bring on an oldies station to hurt B101.

I'm hoping a good rock station to counter HJY, classic rock I mean, not BRU's new alternative stuff.

There has to be a reason http://coolfm.com/ brings you to The Score's website & has for quite a while now. Going off on a more interesting limb than whether or not WALE will ever be back on the air, the word "cool" means to me some form of an oldies format as opposed to classic rock. If they go classic hits, they're entering that race kind of late & just playing what B101 plays isn't going to do it. More concentration on the 60s & 70s could be a demographics issue, but RI is an old state & it isn't getting any younger. Maybe something similar to the old B101 without the 50s but make it fun sounding.

This thread is hijacked I know, but although I realize B101 is doing well I'd love to know where their listeners came from. Some from HJY. Maybe they share with WCTK, but again country is doing better & better in this market in spite of what the competiton is doing. If a lot of B101's original listeners just stuck with the station through the format change, they represent the laziness of Rhode Island listeners & are ripe for the picking.

Mornings: Jimmy Gray & Larry Kruger
Middays: Big John
Afternoons: Cruisin' Bruce
Nights: Holland, who can voicetrack when he's at an airport
Weekend Feature: Amazing Women With Big Hair

I'll climb off the limb now. You'd really need to see the Arbys to come up with an intelligent opinion about this.

Run...I haven't seen any numbers recently; but my guess would be some from Lite, some from SNE, some from HJY and more than likely a lot of the old WRX listeners that really haven't had an outlet to listen to since they fliped to FNX prior to Entercom buying them. This is a very large market to not have a true classic rock station (especially here on the east coast). There are too many wasted frequencies here in Providence in my book and either there needs to be major changes at those stations or I could see major shifts in the programming....99.7 could go back to classic rock (they were The Hawk previously). I really wouldn't be surprised. I also see that Andy gresh is doing time at ESPN radio over the weekend, not good news for those on the trail, very good news for him as they have squashed his career so far at the Score....if Andy leaves (and it looks more and more likely that he should) they will be left with Scott as the only true "talent" and I think it will be down to 1 sports station in the market at the old WRX locale....thoughts?

Whaaaaa....??? Dude, that problem is either terrain shielding in a specific location...or you've got a crappy radio. I've listened to 99.7FM all throughout I-295 around Providence and I-95 through Providence. The only times I lose it are on the northern slopes of those big hills on I-295. Granted, I've got a really good FM tuner (one of the better Blaupunkts). And you can't deny that 99.7 covers the entire southern half of Rhode Island quite solidly.

I've rarely listened to 790AM but the static could be something in your car. I got used to leaving my cellphone on the car charger all the time and never wondered why my AM listening always had so much annoying buzz and static. Then one time I unplugged the charger from the car's socket and the static just disappeared; it was that noisy.

If they do make it a music station, they should make it exclusive to southern Rhode Island, because that is the only are where you can get a clear signal. I would love to see a classic country station to give fans of older country music a place to hang their hats. Like the old WJJF, the slogan could be "Broadcasting Country Music From The Country", because the stick is in Exeter, and the signal does cover rural areas like western Kent County, and Washington County. They could also say "Southern Rhode Island's Home For Real Country".

A car radio is not the best judgment of signal strength. I had a Pioneer SuperTuner III in my Chevy S-10 that could pick up 99.7 in places it shouldn't have been heard. Depending on your radio, and antenna, its gonna vary. Also, with 790AM, I've found the directional night time signal much more difficult to pick up outside of the Narragansett Bay area. If you look at the night time signal on Radio Locator, its pretty much pointing towards the fishies. During the day I have no problem picking up 790 crystal clear around the state. Of course, most of the time I'm listening to WEEI anyway, so the point is moot ;D.

Webcastboy,
I know a small amount of it is engine noise, and I was not using my cell phone or charging it. Along Atwood Ave. in from Plainfieild Pike to the Town Hall where 630 and 790 are fair at best, so are 550, 920, 1220, and 1290. Once away from that area they are better. They are all fair along Route 44 in Smithfield heading west past 295. I get heavy static from the electrical lines, but once I am past them, there are still patches or moderate static in that area. I would expect the Providence stations to have better coverage than that. Boston's WBZ in the same areas, away from the electrical lines, sounds the same as the locals, with minor static. For 99.7 the problem area is the Atwood Ave. exit off from the 6/10 Connector, coming from 295 South, Atwood Ave. to Plainfield Pike, and Plainfield Pike into Providence. This is the area where many FM signals go bad. Local stations most affected in this area are 99.7 and 106.3 Just a few miles outside of this area, I get the Boston stations (and those two locals) all clearly, but in this area they all are fair at best, 92.9 and 105.7 are almost non-existent.

Jay,

106.3 has a notoriously bad signal as if you look at the map and their stick location and power, there are parts of downtown providence where you can't get it and 99.7 stick location is also a concern as it is in the lower 1/2 of the state
