wskz Chattanooga making a signal change

KZ 106 is going to apply to change its signal due to the fact that Atlanta market 106.7 has applied to move into the city at 106.5fm and two 100kw watt stations at 106.5 can not exist in both Atlanta and Chattanooga at the same time. KZ 106 will pretty much have to change frequencies unless they do a major downgrade to class A (and that may not even work for WSKZ)

How did the Atlanta get approval for 106.5 at all, at any class? Chattanooga isn't really THAT far off. Didn't KZ raise a stink? They have a right to 106.5 and should not have to move. Are the two co-owned by any chance?

I don't think Atlanta is APPROVED for anything yet. They have filed and application to GET APPROVAL from the FCC.

The language in the WYAY application about "there will be an application from KZ" indicates that the two owners have probably worked out an agreement. If you will do this, I will do this. If you will do this, I will pay your expenses to do that.

These applications would not be ON FILE now if the lawyers and engineers did not believe they have a high probability of being approved. Features in the applications probably answer all the question they would expect the regulators to ask in a case like this.

As secondchoice tries to mention, there's no need for any of that. Cumulus owns both and probably views a full-market signal in Atlanta as being more desirable than a full class C in Chattanooga.

IIRC there was an "agreement" between 106.5 and 106.7 sometime in the past when both were separate owned. I think the stations are several miles too close for each to be a full C. Both stations "accept" some interference in parts of North GA. There are some engineers lurking this board who know the whole story. If WSKZ stays on it's current tower on Signal Mountain at about the same height with at least 50KW, there will be very little difference in the signal.

Perhaps if Art Sutton is on this board and reading this, maybe he can share the technical details. He's usually in the know on this kind of stuff.

While both are co-owned, for a lot of my area KZ is the only true classic rock which has any kind of good signal. WIMZ-FM is darn near impossible to receive in McMinn County and environs. WLLJ J 103 overdeviates so much, few tuners in the county will separate them. My HH Scott 312d is the only tuner which will hold WIMZ without fades on anything but a super directional Yagi on a rotator.

Tower height is what probably matters more in the Chattanooga area. The mountains to the west kill off KZ on the Nashville side. 106.7 in Nashville is not a spacing issue with it's small signal. Have to admit that this co-ownership situation is indeed a positive thing, even if Crums is at the hellm.

Hoping a move could possibly get KZ back into Huntsville via DX, But if they decrease power I can pretty much forget it ever overpowering the 106.5 translator here again :(
