WSLC-FM Roanoke Playlist

Memo to Brett Sharp and Robynn Jaymes, music power brokers at WSLC/94.9 Star Country.......

It appears to this listener that the following "gold rotation" songs are turning over way too many times in a given 2-week period on your station...

"Bye Bye" - Jo Dee Messina
"It's A Great Day To Be Alive" - Travis Tritt
"When You Say Nothing At All" - Allison Krauss
"Third Rate Romance" - Sammy Kershaw
"Carrying Your Love With Me" - George Strait
"Livin' On Love" - Alan Jackson
"Mr. Mom" - Lonestar
"Courtesy of the Red White and Blue (Angry American)" - Toby Keith

Now, I don't claim to be a program director, but to me your so-called "power gold" playlist is a bit too small. When was the last time you guys did any auditorium or call-out research?

How often are they playing? Since I'm no longer in the market I don't get to listen as much as before, but being an MD I am curious how often you heard these songs. I have always really enjoyed listening to them. All but the Sammy Kershaw song are what most stations consider "power gold" and they would normally play every day, maybe even twice, if no artist conflicts. If you are hearing them in the same daypart every day or every other day then it's a scheduling not short play list problem.

Do not even get me started on the whole music research band wagon. I see so many stations pay big money to do this "research" just to play the exact same gold as before, the only difference is, when they do research, they find those forgotten hits from the early 90's still do ok, songs like Mark Collie "Even The Man In The Moon Is Crying". So what happens, the PD or MD decides to add a "light" cat. to their clock to play these songs once every 5 days or so, and they sit back listen to all they created, heard it was good, and feel like they really accomplished something. Oh yeah, only after spending about 50 to 80 grand on research...GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!

The deal with research is...if you consistantly get the same results, it validates the research. If you have song titles wildly fluctuating between test results, it means the research is faulty or meaningless. Music testing is similar to Arbitron ratings in that changes from book to book or test to test aren't always meaningful; its gradual changes over a period of time that are meaningful.
