WSLR-LP and interfering translator

New college of Sarasota has a LPFM on the air that is a true community gem. WSLR-LP Unfortunately due to FCC rules it is plagued with interference from a religious translator located in Bradenton. At the college itself, the station can barely be heard at the college. This is due to the fact that WSLR-LP's transmitter is located on a cell tower at Beneva and Bahia Vista on the same tower as 1220 AM. Forget Manatee reception. Since the programming on this translator can be heard on other frequencies, I dont see why they cant either shut off the translator, or move it to another frequency. Translators can go on adjacent freqs. LPFM's cannot due to rules that have kept out most of them. My suggestion is to move the translator to 96.3 and let WSLR-LP have 96.5. Maybe WSLR can find a rich doner that will pay for the fees to move the translator. That would make everyone happy. This little low power station is being operated like LPFM's were designed to do, and not just be repeater translators for Idaho based religious broadcasters.

I understand that both are secondary. Actually the translator should be secondary to the LPFM, translators move all the time. They can move to adjacent freqs, LP's have to protect to the third adjacent. Not fair but the major broadcasters wanted to kill the service. The LP and translator in Saramana are only a few miles apart co channel. This is not good for either

Well, I heard WSLR spattering real bad over 96.3 and 96.7 all the way up to SR 70 & US 301... Even after the translator kicked in, the splatter was still bad on both adjacent channels from WSLR...

Why did they move their transmitter farther south... should have been closer to the county line to serve both counties as limited as they are... How about trying to get it on one of the state towers along the Interstate ??? or the old 1450 tower on city island... no FM on it anymore... for that matter, there should be a decent cell tower somewhere near University Pkwy...

I agree with the splatter. There are serious problems with the WSLR-LP signal. It's not even stereo. My guess is that it's being fed with too hot audio. Yes, it needs an engineer to straighten it out. I'm not even sure the antenna they use on that cell tower is legal. It is two bays, and I dont think you are allowed a gain antenna on an LPFM. Not 100% sure though. Programming wise, I'm impressed. Kinda like a mini WMNF. Considerably left leaning, but does represent the community with a good cross section of programming
