WSLY 104.9 FM Has Been Jacked

That's right, Meridian area posters. I was listening to that station and discovered this change, earlier tonight. I was tuned in and heard some rock tunes on 104.9. I was wondering what was going on. Usually when I listen to WSLY, I hear Urban tunes. When the announcer said this is WSLY York Alabama, that shocked me. I didn't expect WSLY to become Jack FM. Anyway, now that your area has Jack, hope this new format will have success. As the announcer said, playing whatever we want, this is Jack 104.9.

What is AM 670 WYLS in York playing now? I heard it also changed the format. If it did thats a shame because I listen to its classic country/americana type music whenever I can pick it up. On a good day you can pick it up almost to Jackson on a car radio. Very cool music you never hear anymore. They had that old hillbilly style presentation. very very local sounding. thats why I liked it. Weird operating hours, they used to sign off every day at 3:30 with the song "Have an nice day"<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Pat2 on 01/21/06 03:10 AM.</FONT></P>

Could you tell if this Jack was local or satellited?

When I was listening, it sounded like they were automated. The music may have been originating from the studio of WSLY, in York Alabama, itself.

RDP <><

P.S. This station just recently dropped its Blues and Southern Soul format.

For those wondering, here is a sample of what I heard:

The Bangels
Aerosmith
Counting Crows
Bruce Spingsteen

RADD Spots featuring: The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and Kiss.

Clichemouth posted on the variety hits board that it's satellited. I was suspecting that since ABC recently bought the rights to start a Jack FM satellite service and most of the new Jacks since then have been in smaller markets using the satellite.

Can the Meridian market handle 2 VH stations? Don't forget that 93.5 uses WW1's "SAM" format.<P ID="signature">______________

I could see both Sam and Jack making it. West Alabama has never had anything like Jack before. This will be a breath of fresh air, to an area that is known for having mostly Hip-Hop and Soul on its airwaves.

This will be exciting and awesome. Hope Jack works out for this station. I will check them out, when I able to get them. Heard some great tunes on there, already and liked their presentation.

RDP <><

P.S. I predict this station will soon be a top 5 contender, in the York and Meridian area. Soon as people discover Jack 104.9, they will have runaway success.

I didn't know they had changed formats. Looking at radio-locator, I see where WKZB moved to 106.9. That'll be an interesting battle. However, I'm waiting for a market that has a three-way battle between Tom, Dick and Harry.

According to the official website of the format (http://www.jack.fm), SLY is an ABC Jack affiliate. I heard SAM while I was there for Christmas and it sounded just like every other variety station I've ever heard. Honestly, I'm not sure what the difference between SAM and Jack could be... SAM sounded like it was basically the same thing as Jack FM in Indianapolis and Mike FM (Jack-like clone) that my company in Fort Wayne runs. I'm sure you already know this but the entire variety format is mostly a classic rock tilt with some newer and older pop tunes thrown in for mix with a little bit of new "pop" rock (Hoobastank, Creed, etc).

I don't think there's any way that Meridian will be able to support two stations like that. One of them will be gone by the end of the year... as to which one it'll be, I think the Jack presentation is the better of the two that are there now. After all, with two stations playing almost exactly the same music, presentation is what it will come down to.

Eddie-FM in Meridian

> Can the Meridian market handle 2 VH stations? Don't forget

A great idea for Meridian... Eddie-FM. It would play only the stuff that Eddie approves of. And he could do the weather bulletins too. Oh wait, that's already been done at WOKK.

> Could you tell if this Jack was local or satellited?

Just emailed the pd... they're ABC Sat. Don't think they're doing any local programming by the tone of the email or the promos I heard this weekend passing through the area.

I will say, however, that having listened to SAM in Meridian and now JACK.... WW1's Sam won't win the battle in the twin states area, OR nationally either.
