WSLY In York Has Flipped

To Rock Tunes again. Heard some Third Eye Blind and P.O.D. while I was surfing by there.

For those that can get this station, I hope this info is accurate. If so, their days as a Southern Gospel station are over.

I wonder what format they'll try next, if Rock doesn't work for them?

P.S. If this info is incorrect, just overlook it.

Didn't they use a "Jack" format before the switch to southern gospel? Is that what they're doing now or is this something entirely different?

I could barely hear them. I was tuned in, earlier this afternoon and discovered it.

Heard Ken Michaels speak of them broadcasting UWA football, during the football season.

Maybe someone that can get it better than us, will let us know what's going on.

I'm not even sure that they're doing Jack again.

Was able to catch them today. They're still doing Southern Gospel. Must have heard something else, when I surfed by, on yesterday.

I live in an area, where many different signals are known for being heard. I can hear Huntsville, Dothan, Panama City, Meridian and even Columbus Georgia/Mississippi, when the conditions are just right.

I live about 50 miles from York. They are playing country. At times I'm hearing 4-5 songs without any imaging. This station was urban/R&B for about 35 years and was successful. I think that Mr. Barney Grant passed away in 2004. Early 06 they changed to Jack-FM. The word was that Grant's son said "no more preachers, sports, and political...we're playing what we want". Before the 06 general election there were political spots. They covered Demopolis Football after WIN98 and Demopolis High fell out. When they flipped to gospel in 07 they ran one or two minute spots literally begging for preachers. Now its country...classic country, I think. What's next...Urban/R&B ???

Mr Grant's son had actually quit two weeks ago and a week later, Ken Michaels was let go from Grantel Broadcasting/WYLS-AM 670/WSLY-FM 104.9 last weekend.

That's news to me.  If they've changed, then I haven't noticed it.  For the past few days now, I've been getting 104.9 FM from Montgomery.  This was the translator for Tiger Rock, which is now doing WKXN from Greenville.

Speaking of Demopolis High Football, WZNJ was the station carrying them.  When ZNJ switched over to Urban, that's when they dropped them.  The current owner(s) wanted to broadcast them on WXAL AM, since that station was changing over over to Sports but the school didn't like that idea and wanted to stay on FM.  I read about that fiasco, while visting a Demopolis Alabama based Chat Room, a year or so ago. To this day, I still detest the format this station is catering to.

If 104.9 FM in York were to go back to Urban, would they hire new people or would their former DJ's, return and leave from WZNJ.  If WSLY were to go back to Urban, would WZNJ stay Urban or go for something else?

I'm guessing WSLY (targeting Meridian) got squeezed out once WZKS and WJXM came on the scene. With past travels toward West Alabama with my dad, I know WSLY (as "Sly 104-9") had black listeners locked up pretty much toward Tuscaloosa. Now those folks on the Alabama side are probably listening to WZNJ 106.5 while still DX'ing the newer Meridian stations.

It is true that Ken was let go, sad, but unfortunately tree. He was a good guy.

I have a feeling the son, Wayne, may have come back. The owner of the stations now Is Mr. Grant's wife, Sarah is is the Postmaster in York, Alabama.

And if they went back to their Sly 104.9 format, I highly doubt they'd hire the old DJ's back for multiple reasons.

really? O.M.Gosh! you remember that ole' country tune that Bill Engvall did, "Here's Your Sign?" Perfect! "Well Werk Fur Fode!"
