WSM AM on REDUCED DAYTIME POWER ???

For several weeks now, I have found WSM AM to be totally gone from my radios here in Lexington, KY during DAYTIME hours. Lexington is within their fringe pattern during the day, but for some reason recently, they have "not been there" on many days. It was coming in this past Sunday, but is gone again today when I checked it on my car radio. I have some very sensitive radio equipment here with outdoor antennas and other distant stations are still there, as usual (like WOWO, WGN and even WLAC).

I sent WSM an email a couple of weeks ago asking about this, but they have not responded.

Maybe they are doing work on their tower (like painting) during the day, so they have to cut power back???

Just curious.

The Blaw-Knox tower had to be pressure washed, scraped and painted. This is no small task due to the size and detail. WSM must operate on its short tower and 5kW in order to protect the workers. It is switched to this mode at 7AM and back to full power at about 6P when weather allows.

As of today, they are a little more than 3/4 of the way toward finishing. Two bands below the mid-section is all that remains, give it about five or six days and it will be done.

Thank you for the answer to my question. I figured they were working on the tower during daylight hours because at night, it has been at it's usual strong signal level here in Central Kentucky after being totally absent during most daylight hours, when it is normally heard here. This has been going on for many weeks.

One of my all-time favorite stations... Was wondering the same thing when it was coming in clearly here in northern Alabama Saturday a.m. and then suddenly disappeared until later in the evening...
