WSM AM Tower

Lots of activity around the base of the WSM AM tower today? Any idea what they are doing. Was at a swim meet at the pool stones throw around.

If they were doing tower maintenance, they may have been on the small backup tower that is driving by a seperate 5 KW transmitter.

Maybe if Watt is monitoring this board, he may be able to tell us. One thing in my personal opinion is that all those new housing subdivisions in Brentwood has hurt WSM-AM's signal some.
Those stupid contractors should have known that when you're buing a house near a 50 KW transmitter site, you're going to get some RF get into AT&T lines, NES lines, Comcast lines, etc. There should be a law that the home contractor should tell the home buyer this before they sell them the newly built home.
I got to hang out at the WSM-AM site in the mid 80's when Evertt Lawson was Chief Engineer. What a cool place! This was when WSM was in AM Stereo. I love to watch the WSM-AM tower lite up at night!

Actually looked like they were stringing cable. Day 2 of swim meet, I will see what's up today.

When I first saw this subject line, I thought it said "WSM AM THE Tower"! ;D If any station ever had the right to bill itself as "the tower," they would be the ones! That Blaw-Knox is the stuff of legend, even for non-engineering types like me! ;D

Actually the WLW Blaw Knox is more impressive with those large neon letters, although the WSM tower is higher. It was built by the same crew immediately after they finished the WSM tower. Of the surviving diamond towers, which are actually two shorter structures with one perched on top of the lower one which is upside down, those two are the most striking visually. WBNS in Columbus, Ohio has a smaller cousin and there are a few more, also shorter, scattered around the country, WHO in Iowa had one but replaced it in the 40's and the lower section was used for police radio communications.

Nock ===

For what it's worth, all three tiers of the tower lights (aka "those red strobey things") are now working on the WSM Tower. The top two were out. I believe for the first time in quite some time all the towers in the Brentwood triangle are totally lite. KDF tower
was trashed out forever, for those who kept up with posts over the last few months. Chris Romer's tower lights never burns out for
more than 24 hours, seems like.

it's a long climb up there...and those bulbs are heavy...
but all part of the new consolidation

Don't ask me to climb WSM's tower! I'm one of those "chicken guys" even with the hooks and straps. I went up WMRO's tower about 50', got a breathless feeling, and my wife yell at me told get the hell down from there before I had a heart attack!

WMRO tower is feed by a 3 wire folded unipole and the jumper is at around 85' to match up to our licensed value of 71 ohms. The three wires go all the way to the top. I was going up there to check the connections at the jumper and "chicken man" here couldn't do it. Now Leslie knows why I hate the skylift in Gatlinburg! :-\

Sounds like those cutbacks were pretty severe there....do they at least provide you with a company issued climbing harness?
Next thing you know they will give you a wireless mic and a pair of binoculars and make you climb the tower to do traffic reports....

p.s.....tell Peace and Eidem Bob Horner says hello from Indianapolis.

I'm sure Watt will be more specific but I'm told it was storm damage repair. We've been aware for some time it was coming.
