WSM-AM

Well CR, if you are NOT the smartest, you are one of the finest. That's more than I can or will say about myself. Now back to the second half of the UT-LSU game.

Here's an Idea for WSM it may be a stretch but here it goes:
If someone bought WSM or the current owners changed it to a Non-commercial entity then they could get a non-comm full power FM to mate with it. Then they could tweak the format a bit still playing the old country and bluegrass and maybe lean towards what WDVX here is East Tenn is doing. A Blue Plate special "Live" midday show and other type events.
Just a thought.

To quote long-time WSM transmitter supervisor and co-worker the late Everett Lawson. "Cost a *lot* of money to talk on the radio; a whole *HEAP* of money if you want to talk loud!"

BTW: WSM 85th year of operation celebrated tomorrow...

lol i had forgotten that name..never met him..but sure heard a lot about him...strange thing about radio..two sides..the side that wanted to talk and play records, party, etc....and as a rule new little if nothing about the technical side..and the other side was the engineer..didn't give a hoot about being on the air..but loved twisting wires and big bright glowing tubes... :D

Delta....you might be surprised when you get out into the big world how many engineers were on the air. I worked with one in Houston who was very good and filled in when needed on the air...but had one of the goofy personal lives you only see in sitcoms. Years ago, engineers were so important they made bigger money with their first tickets than many jocs. As rules were relaxed they were needed less. Watt can either verify or dispute this.
Watt........see you tomorrow?

I am 37 and listen to WSM more than any other station. There is a genuineness from WSM that you cannot find anywhere else. Sure there may be times they are pitching tickets hard but I give them grace on that. The fact is that the on air talent is great and I could listen to Eddie Stubbs all the time...the guy eats, lives and breathes music...you can tell he loves it.

I do fear, however, that a station like WSM faces an uphill climb being on the AM. Many of my peers don't listen to AM at all, let alone AM music. My only advice would be for WSM to embrace who they are while, at the same time, making sure that they are embracing the culture in which they live. Have social media strategy and pay attention to your breaks in this PPM world. They can be relevant...though never again dominant.

"when you get out into the big world"...heck buddy can't afford to get out in the big world..people don't believe me when i tell them i've never been to (thought i was gonna say spain didn't you) memphis...farthest west i've ever been in my life is jackson tn..did ball games with charley brewer (remind me to tell you a hiliarious story)..never been on a plane train, or cruise ship..been on a trailways a few times,,have been to new jersey twice..and florida once..didn't care for either place...

85 years is pretty amazing. We had a big birthday party at the transmitter building/party today. I still look around and am amazed at the people I worked with. To have a picture made with Lynn Anderson and Ralph Emery and the WSM folks who were there still gives me a thrill. And I can say, hey, for 22 years I was a part of it. I am very proud to have had a part in notifying Middle Tennessee of the news (breaking and otherwise) for all those years. We didn't make our daily assignments from the morning news papers...we had those stories yesterday.
A good time was had by all...and as someone was remarking, we were like family, we worked together, ate together, laughed together, celebrated the good times and occasionally, cried together. Few, if any other stations have the history and the feelings most of us who worked there felt.

Last paragraph says so much Buddy --- that is what I think is missing from radio today. The heart, the soul, the good ole sincere passionate good spirited fights with the competition. Like I said earlier --- you guys were and are Nashville's radio station!

They are planning to return to the magnolia lobby studio later this month and the staff is working feverishly toward that end as we type.
